The 9th women's handball world championship was held from December 4th to 14th, 1986 in the Netherlands . A total of 16 teams competed. The Soviet Union became world champions for the second time in a row with a 30:22 final victory over Czechoslovakia .

Preliminary round

In the preliminary round, the participants competed in four groups with four teams each. The best three teams in each group qualified for the main round. The bottom of the group competed against each other in a placement round for places 13 to 16.
