The 20th women's handball world championship was held from December 2nd to 18th, 2011 in Brazil . The organizer was the International Handball Federation (IHF). Norway became world champion in 2011 after beating France 32:24 in the final.
Participating teams
As the host of the tournament, Brazil is automatically qualified. As the winner of the 2009 World Cup , the Russian national women's handball team is also automatically qualified for the tournament; Russia won the title for the third time in a row in 2009.
The three best-placed teams in the 2010 European Championship (Norway, Sweden, Romania) are also included as participants . The European handball federation provides eight more places on the field of participants . In qualifying tournaments from November 30th to December 5th, 2010 the teams were determined, which on 4th / 5th. June and 11./12. June 2011 to play off participation in the World Cup.
The participating teams come from Brazil (hosts), Russia (defending champions), Angola , Tunisia , Ivory Coast (qualified via the 2010 African Championship), Norway , Sweden , Romania (qualified via the 2010 European Women's Handball Championship ), Kazakhstan , South Korea , China , Japan (qualified via the 2010 Asian Cup), Australia (qualified via the 2010 Oceania Cup), Croatia , Denmark , France , Germany , Iceland , Montenegro , the Netherlands and Spain (qualified via the European Playoffs).
Changes
The 2007 World Cup was played in six groups of four followed by a main round and from the quarterfinals in a knockout phase, at the 2009 World Cup in four groups of six followed by a main round and a knockout phase from the semi-finals; In 2011, a preliminary round in four groups of six is followed by a knockout phase beginning with the round of 16. Places 1 to 8 and 17 to 24 are played out.
A maximum of two time-outs may be requested per half, and a maximum of one time-out in the last five minutes of a game. The half-time break was extended by five to fifteen minutes.
