The 17th Women's Handball World Championship was from 5 to 18 December 2005 in Russia Saint Petersburg held. A total of 24 teams initially competed against each other in four groups in a preliminary round. This was followed by the main round with six teams each in two groups. This was followed by qualifying games with semi-finals and finals as well as placement games for places 3 to 8. World champions 2005 Russia became after a 28:23 victory in the final against Romania.

The main round was initially held in two groups. In group 1, the first three teams from preliminary round groups A and B played, in group 2 the first three teams from preliminary round groups C and D. The results of the teams that had already met in the preliminary round were taken over.
The first two teams from groups 1 and 2 played the semi-finals, the third-placed teams played fifth place and the fourth-placed teams seventh place.
