Great End is one of the 214 Wainwright mountains ( Fell ) in northern England's Lake District National Park and the northernmost peak of the Scafell massif .

While the Great End looks like a small hill when viewed from the south, which differs only slightly from its surroundings, when viewed from the north it rises from the basin of Sprinkling Tarn with an imposing and steep rock face . Here is a popular bivouac for hikers ( fellwalkers ) and rock climbers.

Alfred Wainwright wrote of Great End in his Pictorial Guide to the Lakeland Fells : "This is the true Lakeland of the fellwalker, the sort of terrain that calls him back time after time."

The almost 200 meter high north side consists of a rock face that is criss-crossed with numerous crevices ( gully ), in which snow can often be found until late in spring. One of them is Cust's Gully , named after the Yorkshire climber and draftsman Arthur Cust , who created numerous watercolors of the Matterhorn and Mont Blanc . Cust's Gully is classified as first degree rock climbing. For Fellwalker, however, it represents a significant obstacle to the ascent from Sprinkling Tarn. Arthur Cust's first winter ascent is documented in 1880 , although it is believed that he had previously managed to reach Great End in winter this way.

The Great End's northwest ridge leads to Sty Head Pass , which connects the Wasdale , Great Langdale and Borrowdale valleys . To the southeast is the Esk home pass , from which you can reach the Eskdale valley . In the south, a flat saddle between Ill Crag and Broad Crag leads to England's highest mountain, Scafell Pike , after about two kilometers .

From the summit you have an unobstructed view to the north into Borrowdale, while the panorama to the south is dominated by Scafell Pike. The upper areas of the numerous gullies on the north face offer spectacular views of the Sprinkling Tarn.
