particularities highest mountain in England

At 978 meters, Scafell Pike is the highest mountain in England and one of the 214 Wainwright mountains in the Lake District .

Surname

The Scafell Pike can easily be confused with the eponymous Sca Fell , a good kilometer to the southwest, but only 964 meters high , to which it is connected via the Mickledore rock ridge.

The reason the higher peak is confusingly referred to as a minor peak is because the triad of peaks known today as Scafell Pike, Ill Crag, and Broad Crag were previously collectively referred to as the Pikes of Sca Fell . Since the Sca Fell appears to tower over the more distant pikes from the south and west , it has long been mistaken for the main peak. The subordinate term Scafell Pike for the western part of the Pikes was coined on a faulty map of the Ordnance Survey , the authors of which also succumbed to the deception. However, the naming has become so common that it was not changed even when the error was discovered during the official survey of the peak.

history

In 1920 Lord Leconfield donated the entire area to the National Trust . He wanted to honor the men of the Lake District "who had fallen for God, King, Freedom, Peace and Justice in World War I ".

Ascent

  • The most used route leads from Wasdale Head to the west at the north end of Wast Water and does not present any particular technical difficulties.
  • An alternative route follows the so-called Corridor Route on the western flank of the Scafell massif until it meets the Wasdale route near the summit.
  • A longer but easy third route to the summit is from Seathwaite via Grains Gill and Esk Home Pass .
  • An ascent is also possible from Great Langdale , from Dungeon Ghyll via Rossett Gill to Esk home pass .
  • The longest and most strenuous ascent route leads from Eskdale to the summit.

geology

The Scafell Pike consists of igneous rock from the geological period of the Ordovician . Geologically, it is part of the Borrowdale volcanoes .

Mountain sports

The Scafell Pike can be climbed in the National Three Peaks Challenge , an endurance test in which the highest mountains in Scotland ( Ben Nevis ) and Wales ( Snowdon ) have to be climbed within 24 hours .
