Wainwright (mountain)
Mountains ( fells ) in the Lake District National Park in northern England are referred to as Wainwright and are mentioned in the seven-volume work Pictorial Guide to the Lakeland Fells by the author and illustrator Alfred Wainwright . A total of 214 mountains are described. There are no restrictions based on height, location or topographical features, but a classification based on the author's personal point of view.
To classify them, they were commonly referred to as The Wainwrights by the Fellwalkers (mountain walkers) in Great Britain, similar to other compositions of mountains over time .
Another list of 102 hills comes from the later published book The Outlying Fells of Lakeland . However, these outside furs are generally not counted among the Wainwrights.
In 2014, Steve Birkinshaw set a new record in mountain running over all Wainwrights when he covered the 512 km long total distance with 36,000 meters of altitude, which leads over all mountains, in six days and 13 hours. He beat the 27-year-old record of Joss Naylor, who needed seven days, an hour and 25 minutes for the run. In Great Britain, “collecting” the Wainwrights and other classified mountains counts as a bizarre pastime (so-called “peak bagging”) for hikers.
