The Branstree is a 713 m high mountain in the Lake District , Cumbria , England . The Branstree is at the southwest end of the Mardale Valley and overlooks the Haweswater Reservoir .
topography
The western end of the Mardale Valley is framed by a chain of mountains. In the north this chain begins with the high raise , followed by High Street and Harter Fell in the west and finally Branstree and Selside Pike in the south.
The summit of the Branstree is flat and grassy. On the Ordnance Survey map, east of the summit named Branstree, there is a second unnamed summit, sometimes referred to as High Howes , which Alfred Wainwright attributed to the Branstree.
The Harter Fell is located southwest of the Branstree. Between the two mountains lies the Gatescarth Pass , which is a traditional pedestrian connection between the Longsleddale Valley and the Mardale Valley and is still used today by hikers as an ascent to Harter Fell and Branstree.
On the southern slope of the Branstree at the western end of the Mosedale valley, the Mosedale Cottage is a shepherd's hut that can serve as a guide in bad weather.
The summit
The summit of Branstree is flat and, with only 137 m Vertical separation only bad conditions for good panorama. In the east, however, the Pennines can be seen. A small cairn lies on the north side of the summit.
Ascent
The ascent to the Branstree can be made from the surrounding valleys. Gatescarth Pass offers the opportunity to climb the mountain from the end of the roads in Mardale Valley and Longsleddale Valley. An ascent starting near Mosedale Cottage is also possible, as is one via Mardale Common on Old Corpse Road from the edge of Haweswater Reservoir.
