Hardknott Roman Fort

Principia (staff building), Hardknott Roman Fort

At a height of 200 m on the western flank of the mountain towards Eskdale lie the remains of a Roman camp. The Hardknott Roman Fort (or Mediobogdum and occasionally Hardknott Castle ) was built under the Roman Emperor Hadrian between 120 and 138 AD. The fort was abandoned soon after its construction under the impact of Roman expansion into Scotland. But from around 200 AD the fort was used again and then used continuously until the end of the 4th century.

The fort was supposed to secure the road that led from the Roman port at Ravenglass to the Roman fort at Ambleside over the Hardknott Pass.

The remains inside the fort, which can still be seen today, come from the officers' quarters and a grain store. Remnants of a bathhouse can also be seen. The soldiers' accommodations are no longer visible.

A parade ground is about 200 m east of the camp.

The land on which the camp is located belongs to the National Trust . The facility itself is managed by English Heritage .
