The Harter Fell is a mountain in Cumbria , England in the south-west of the Lake District between the Eskdale Valley and the Duddon Valley .

The mountain has a notch height of 276 m with a total height of 649 m and is therefore a Marilyn . There is a trigonometric point on the mountain .

The Harter Fell borders the Hardknott Pass to the south.

Alfred Wainwright described the mountain as one of the very few beautiful mountains in the Lake District, especially seen from Eskdale. There are hiking trails from all directions on the Harter Fell.

geology

The mountain provides an insight into the geology of the region. The mountain consists mostly of volcanic andesite . But if the layer structure is clearly visible, there is a layer of dacite underneath the top layer of andesite , which in turn lies on top of an andesite layer. An intercalation of pyroclastic sediments between the layers is visible on the northern slope . At the end of the 19th century copper was mined on the hard skin. The traces of this degradation are still visible today.
