Duddon Valley, Cumbria

The Duddon Valley is a valley in the Lake District in Cumbria , England . The valley is sometimes referred to as Dunnerdale .

The River Duddon flows from Wrynose Pass down to the hamlet of Cockley Beck , which, together with the road between Hardknott Pass and Wrynose Pass, marks the northern limit of the valley, which extends south for about 20 km. The valley is only further than 1.5 km in a few places.
The valley is bordered to the east by the Old Man of Coniston and to the west by Harter Fell , Ulpha Fell, Whitfell, Bootle Fell and Black Combe.
The valley ends with the mouth of the Duddon at Broughton-in-Furness on Morecambe Bay .

The slopes of the valley are covered with forest, especially in the southeast, up to a height of about 250 m. The forest area is one of the largest in the Lake District , along with the areas at Ullswater and Borrowdale . The forests have been a Site of Special Scientific Interest since 1994 . The forest areas are the most important habitat for dormice in Cumbria and European squirrels live here. Forests were previously tended for commercial logging, and oak and birch are the most common tree species. Non-native crops were introduced to a small extent, but they did not affect the original character of the forests.
