View of Wrynose Pass from the Duddon Valley

The pass lies at an altitude of 393 m and is bounded in the north by the summit of the Pike of Blisco and in the south by the summit of Swirl How . From the west, a road leads from Hardknott Pass through the Duddon Valley onto the pass. The road slopes east into the Little Langdale Valley. The road was built by the Romans in the 2nd century to connect their port and fort at Ravenglass with their fort at Ambleside . The road is one of the steepest in England with an incline of up to 30 percent and is often closed in winter due to ice and snow.

The Three Shire Stone stands on Wrynose Pass , as this was the border between the counties of Cumberland , Lancashire and Westmorland until 1974 .

On the Wrynose Pass, not far from the Three Shire Stone, there is the source of Duddon and the source of Brathay .
