Dunmail Raise is a mountain pass in the Lake District in Cumbria , England . At 238 m, the pass is the highest point on the A591 from Keswick to Kendal south of Thirlmere and north of Grasmere .
To the east of the pass are the Helvellyn and Fairfield , to the west of the High Raise .
On the pass there is a large cairn that is believed to be the tomb of Dunmail , the last king of Cumbria, and this explains the name of the pass. The grave is believed to be the historic border between Cumbria and Westmorland , although there is no evidence of this.
