The Hardknott Pass is a mountain pass in the Lake District in Cumbria , England .
The pass lies at an altitude of 393 m and is bounded in the north by the summit of Hard Knott and in the south by the summit of Harter Fell . From the west, a road runs from Ravenglass through the Eskdale Valley over Hardknott Pass. The road slopes east into the Duddon Valley . The road was built by the Romans in the 2nd century to connect their port and fort at Ravenglass with their fort at Ambleside . At a height of 200 m on the western side of the pass are the remains of a Roman fort managed by English Heritage .
The road is one of the steepest in England with an incline of up to 30 percent and is often closed in winter due to ice and snow.
