The Kirkstone Pass is a mountain pass in the Lake District in Cumbria , England .
The A592 runs over the pass and connects Ambleside with Patterdale . With a height of 454 m it is the highest passable pass in the Lake District.
To the west of the pass is the Middle Dodd . On the eastern side the pass is bounded by the mountains of the Caudale Moor and the Hartsop Dott .
The Kirkstone Beck rises on the Kirkstone Pass .
On the northern side of the pass below the Hartsop Dott there is a disused quarry . On the south side not far from the top of the pass is the Kirkstone Pass Inn , the third highest pub in England.
The name of the pass comes from a stone, the kirkstone , which stands next to the road near the pub towards Patterdale. The stone looks like a church tower ("kirk" means "church" in old Norwegian ).
