The Shap Summit is a mountain pass in Cumbria , England . The pass is bounded to the east by Crosby Ravensworth Fell and to the west by Seat Robert and Langhowe Pike.
Both the M6 motorway and the West Coast Main Line ( 54 ° 30 ′ N , 2 ° 40 ′ W ) of the railroad cross the pass. The ascent to the north, at 1:75, was often too steep for steam locomotives and therefore additional locomotives were stationed in Tebay to enable the trains to cross the pass.
The motorway crosses the pass west ( 54 ° 30 ′ N , 2 ° 39 ′ W ) of the railway line and reaches a pass height of 316 meters.
