The Brathay is a river in the Lake District , Cumbria in England . The Brathay has its origin on the Wrynose Pass , not far from the Three Shire Stone .
The Brathay follows the road east over Wrynose Pass. It flows first through Little Langdale Tarn and then through Elter Water Lake.
The Brathay flows into the Rothay southwest of Ambleside .
The entire length of the river was part of the historic border between Lancashire and Westmorland and is now entirely in Cumbria .
