The River Leven [ ˈlɛvvən ] is a river in Cumbria , England .

The Leven rises at Lakeside at the southernmost point of Lake Windermere , which feeds it. The river flows southeast for 13 km before flowing into Morecambe Bay . The river and its estuary are the boundary between the Furness and Cartmel peninsulas . The influence of the tides on the river reaches as far as Haverthwaite , where it is navigable when coming from the south. To the north, the river is navigable between Windermere and Newby Bridge .

The only major tributary of the Leven is the Rusland Pool , which drains the Grizedale Forest and the Rusland Valley .

Salmon live in Leven . The river is popular with kayakers because it has difficulties from III to IV between Newby Bridge and Haverthwaite and is supplied with water consistently through the year by Lake Windermere.
