Grizedale Forest is an approximately 24 km² wooded area in the Lake District National Park in Northern England . It is located between Lakes Coniston Water and Windermere, south of the village of Hawkshead .

The name "Grizedale" is derived from the Old Norse griss and dalr , which means "wild boar valley".

In the area of the Grizedale Forest, in contrast to the rest of the Lake District, there are only lower hills and smaller lakes ( Tarn ). It is administered by the Forestry Commission and is a popular destination for the Lake District. The national park's visitor center is located on the site of the Grizedale Hall mansion, which was demolished in 1957 . In addition to marked hiking trails and mountain bike routes and a rope course, there is a youth hostel, a college of the University of Lancaster and a visitor information center.

There are around 90 sculptures, usually made of natural materials such as wood or stone, distributed throughout the forest. They are the result of an art project by the Grizedale Arts Society , which has been promoting contemporary English artists such as David Nash , Sally Matthews and Andy Goldsworthy since 1977 . Some of her works can also be seen in the Grizedale Forest.

The highest point is the 314 m high Carron Crag .
