The national parks in England and Wales are governed by the National Parks and Access to the Countryside Act 1949 . In contrast to the national parks of many other states, the English national parks are not state-owned and are not under state administration. Each national park is managed by its own national park office. The national parks can even include larger settlements. A large part of the national park area is privately owned.
An estimated 110 million people visit national parks in England and Wales each year.
