The Cairngorms National Park (English Cairngorms National Park , Gaelic Üghdarras Pàirc Nàiseanta a 'Mhonaidh Ruaidh ) is the largest and at the same time the second youngest of the fifteen national parks in the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland . Its area is 3,800 km².

After a new law to protect the landscape was passed in the Scottish Parliament , it was established in September 2003 as one of two Scottish national parks.

The site

The national park in the central highlands is shaped by the eponymous mountain range of the Cairngorms , part of the wider Grampian Mountains . The landscape is characterized by the heather-covered plateaus, the deep black shimmering lakes, numerous raised bogs and forests. Large parts of the site are not accessible to traffic.

The boundaries of the national park begin in Grantown-on-Spey in the north to Ballater in the east, to the valley floors of the Angus Glens in the south to Dalwhinnie and Drumought in the west. In the southwest it includes large parts of the Kinloch Laggan. The largest towns are Ballater in the east and Kingussie and Aviemore in the west. The highest point is Ben Macdhui at 1,310 m, the second highest mountain in Scotland. Although two roads lead near the borderline from west to east or from west to south, there is no road connection to the center of the national park. The site can therefore only be reached on foot. To the south-east of Braemar is a popular attraction for tourists, the Balmoral Castle .

Management of the national park

All administrative, scientific and forestry matters, preservation and beautification measures, nature protection and protection of the cultural heritage in the national park as well as information provision and educational work on nature protection are the responsibility of the "Cairngorms National Park Authority", a state institution.

Wildlife

Around 25,000 red deer roam the park's forests and heathland. To the west of the Spey River, there are also Japanese sika deer that are not indigenous, but can cross with the red deer. Therefore, the park administration tries to prevent the animals from spreading to areas east of the Spey. A special attraction is the semi-wild reindeer herd , which includes around 130 to 150 animals. In addition, deer , wild cats , otters , badgers , martens , squirrels , capercaillie , golden eagles and ospreys live in the wild in the national park.
