Capercaillie ( grouse ) are a species of bird from the family of pheasant-like (Phasianidae) used to order the chicken birds heard (Galliformes). The genus occurs exclusively in the Palearctic . The stone wall chicken is native to Siberia . The capercaillie , to which up to twelve subspecies can be assigned depending on the source, occurs in northern Eurasia and overlaps with the stone owl in parts of central Siberia. Occasionally the black grouse and the Caucasian black grouse are also included in the genus . In more recent literature, however, these two species are usually assigned to a separate genus, namely the black grouse .
Similar to black grouse, capercaillie have long, feathered legs but bare toes. The tail plumage consists of 18 long and wide tail feathers. During courtship these are set up and spread.
