Grantown-on-Spey ( Scottish Gaelic Baile Ùr nan Granndach ) is a town in the Scottish Council Area Highland not far from the banks of the Spey . It is located in the traditional county of Moray, which was part of the administrative county of Morayshire between 1889 and 1975 . Between 1975 and 1996 the city was assigned to the Badenoch and Strathspey region . Charlestown of Aberlour is about 30 km east, Inverness 35 km northwest.

history

Sir James Grant founded the city in 1766 under the name Grantown (the name suffix on Spey was only added in 1898) in order to stimulate industrialization. In 1851 there were already 1000 inhabitants. Grantown did not give the desired impetus, but the city established itself as a vacation spot. In 2011 there were 2,428 people living in Grantown-on-Spey.

traffic

The A95 passes the city a few hundred meters south and crosses the Spey over a bridge. The A939 to Nairn runs right through the city .

In 1863 the city was connected to the railway network by the Highland Main Line . The Highland Main Line was given a shorter route between Inverness and Aviemore in 1898 . The older section over Grantown lost its traffic importance. Finally, the route between Aviemore and Forres was discontinued as part of the Beeching Ax in 1965. Grantown had a second station on the route from Boat of Garten to Dufftown, which was also opened in 1863 and branched off from the old Highland Main Line . This connection was also discontinued in 1965.

The Strathspey Railway , a heritage railway that already operates the section of the old Highland Main Line between Aviemore and Broomhill Station (between Boat of Garten and Grantown), is planning to rebuild the line on the section to Grantown. In February 2014, the installation of a new bridge over the Dulnain began to complete the missing five kilometers between Broomhill and Grantown-on-Spey.
