Charlestown of Aberlour , usually short Aberlour , from Gaelic : Obar Lobhair called, is a village on the Spey in the Scottish Council Area Moray . It is about 20 km south of Elgin and west of Keith . For 2011 there are 972 inhabitants.
In Joan Blaeus Atlas of 1654 a settlement called Abirlaur is recorded at this point . The present village was founded in 1812 by Charles Grant and named after his son Charles .

The village is on the A95 . The Strathspey Railway served Aberlour station until 1965 when the line was discontinued. This was converted into a visitor center. About two miles to the northeast, Thomas Telford built the Craigellachie Bridge over the Spey between 1812 and 1814 . In 1970 a new reinforced concrete bridge was built in parallel and the old bridge was closed to traffic.
economy
The city lies in the middle of the important whiskey region Speyside and is the location of the whiskey distilleries Aberlour , Glenallachie and Dailuaine . With Cardhu , Knockando , Glenfarclas , Benrinnes , Glen Grant , Glenrothes , Craigellachie , Glenfiddich , Macallan and Dufftown there are ten other distilleries within ten kilometers. In addition, the traditional baking company Walkers Shortbread Ltd. its headquarters in town.
