Knockando [ˌknɔkanˈduˑ] ( Gaelic : Cnoc Cheannachd ; Eng . Market hill) , is a whiskey distillery in Knockando , Moray , Scotland. The distillery belongs to the spirits group Diageo (formerly United Distillers), and the whiskey is marketed as part of the group's Classic Malts series.
history
Knockando Distillery was founded in 1898 by Ian Thomson on the banks of the River Spey. The establishment of the distillery was followed by a period of overproduction, followed by the collapse of the whiskey industry, which destroyed so many distilleries. Knockando was closed from 1900 to 1904. It was then sold to W & A Gilbey Ltd. at a very low price of GBP 3,500 . sold. In 1952 it was taken over by Justerini & Brooks. In 1969 the number of stills was doubled from 2 to 4. In 1975 Knockando went to IDV / Grand Metropolitan . The one billionth bottle of Knockando was bottled in 1985 in the presence of then Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher .
production
Today the distillery has an annual production of 1.5 million liters of alcohol. Knockando is an important part of the J&B blend. Knockando has been a Classic Malts since 2005 .
Products
Knockando single malts are bottled as vintage whiskeys, which means that they have the year of distillation and the year of bottling on the bottle. The standard single malt is 12 years old and has 43% alcohol by volume. Further bottlings are offered at the age of 15, 18 and 21 years.
