Dufftown Distillery is a whiskey distillery in the whiskey town of Dufftown , Banffshire , Scotland , UK .
history
The Dufftown Distillery was built from an old mill in 1895 by Peter Mackenzie, Richard Stackpole, John Symon and Charles MacPherson. It was the sixth distillery to be built in the famous whiskey town of Dufftown. Production started on November 10, 1896. In 1897 the Dufftown Distillery goes to P. Mackenzie & Co. , who also own the Blair Athol distillery in Pitlochry . In 1933 they are bought by Arthur Bell & Sons for £ 56,000. In 1968 the own malting floors are closed. In 1974 the stills are expanded from two to four and in 1979 to six stills. 1985 United Distillers & Vintner (UDV) (now Diageo ) bought Arthur Bell & Sons .
Dufftown Distillery is Diageo's largest whiskey distillery with an annual capacity of around 5.8 million liters of whiskey.
production
The water for the Speyside distillery comes from Jock's Well. The malt comes from the Burghead malt house in Elgin. The distillery has a mash tun ( mash do ) (10.6 tons) of steel and twelve fermenting vessels ( wash backs ) (per 53,000 l). They are also made of stainless steel. Distillation takes place in three wash stills (19,775 l each, 13,100 l each are used) and three spirit stills (24,080 l each, 15,300 l each are used), which are heated by steam.
Bottlings
The original bottling is a 12, 15 and 18 year old single malt whiskey . They are all bottled with 40% alcohol as The Singleton of Dufftown . The 12-year-old is part of Diageo's Classic Malts Selection . In 2014, three new bottlings with no age information were launched: Spey Cascade , Sunray and Tailfire . There are also other bottlings, primarily for the duty-free and travel retail sectors.
