Glen Elgin is a whiskey distillery near Elgin , Moray , Scotland , UK .

history

Glen Elgin was founded in 1898 by William Simpson, a former manager of the Glenfarclas distillery , and James Carle. Production started in May 1900, but was discontinued after five months. In February 1901, Glen Elgin was sold at auction to the Glen Elgin-Glenlivet Distillery Co. for £ 4,000 . In 1904 the distillery went back into production, but was closed again a year later. In 1906, wine merchant JJ Blanche Co. bought the distillery for £ 7,000 and started production again. In 1929 JJ Blanche died and Glen Elgin was up for sale again. In 1930 the distillery was bought by Scottish Malt Distillers (SMD) and the license went to White Horse Distillers . In 1964, Glen Elgin was renovated, expanding from two to six stills. In 1987 the SMD was taken over by UDV / Diageo . In 1992 the distillery was closed for further renovation, also to install new stills. Production started again in September 1995.

production

The Speyside distillery's water comes from the springs at Millbuies Loch . The malt comes from the United Distillers malthouses in Burghead and Roseisle. The distillery has a mash tun ( mash do ) (8.2 tons) of steel and six fermentation tanks ( wash backs ) (per 40,600 liters) of larch . Distillation takes place in three wash stills (11,000 l each) and three spirit stills (11,700 l each), which are heated by steam spirals.

Bottlings

The original bottling is a 12-year-old single malt whiskey in the Diageo Hidden Malts series. In 2003 a 32 year old single malt (only 1,500 bottles) came onto the market. It has - due to its long storage in the barrel - only 42.3% alcohol.

In 2000, an anniversary bottling was released (100 years of Glen Elgin). These are 750 bottles of a 19-year-old Cask-Strength with around 60% alcohol.
