Cragganmore is a whiskey distillery in Ballindalloch , Moray , Scotland . The distillery belongs to the spirits group Diageo (formerly United Distillers), the whiskey is marketed as part of the group's Classic Malts series.

history

The distillery was founded in 1869 by John Smith at the foot of Craggan More Hill. It is on the grounds of Ballindalloch Castle in the village of Ballindalloch in Banffshire in north east Scotland. The site was chosen by Smith for its proximity to both the Craggan Burn Brook and the Strathspey Railway . He had to persuade the landowner Sir George MacPherson-Grant to lease him a piece of land near the railroad.

Smith was an expert at whiskey distillation. He was previously the manager of the Macallan , Glenlivet , Glenfarclas and the Clydesdale distilleries in Wishaw . The Strathspey Railway has since been shut down; however, the Speyside Way trail runs along it. The Cragganmore Distillery is located on the Official Malt Whiskey Trail in Scotland, which passes eight distilleries in Speyside.

production

Only pure spring water from the Craggan Burn, flowing over hard diabase rock , is used to make the whiskey . The malt used comes from the Roseisle Maltings in Elgin and has a phenol content of just 2 ppm . The two stills that are used in the second distillation process ( spirit stills ) are uniquely flat and short and each hold 6,700 l. This shape contributes significantly to the aroma and taste of Cragganmore.

Products

Cragganmore - 12 Years Old

12 years old

The standard Cragganmore whiskey is golden, slightly dark in color. Its smell is rightly said to be one of the most complex of all single malts. A light, sweet, floral fragrance mixes with a solid body and a malty taste. The finish lasts a long time, is slightly smoky and very aromatic.

Distiller's Edition

Distiller's Editions, offered annually, mature in barrels that previously contained port wine . As a result, it smells sweeter than its younger relative and leaves traces of spices on the palate.

Special edition

Cragganmore issues special editions at irregular intervals. These are producer bottlings that are offered in limited editions and numbered bottles.
