The Macallan is a whiskey distillery in Easter Elchies, Craigellachie , Banffshire , Scotland .

The Macallan is part of the Famous Grouse Blend.

history

Located on the banks of the Spey , The Macallan was one of the first legal distilleries in Scotland: Alexander Reid was granted a distilling license in 1824. When he died in 1847, his son Alexander took over the distillery. After his death, the distillery went to James Shearer Priest and James Davidson in 1858, who 10 years later sold it to James Stuart, who at that time also owned the Glen Spey distillery. In 1882 the distillery was acquired by Roderick Kemp, whose family expanded the company over the next 100 years. From 1965 the number of stills was increased significantly: in 1965 from 6 to 12, 1974 to 18 and 1975 to 21. In 1996 Highland Distillers Ltd. acquired , which at the time also included Bunnahabhain , Glenrothes and Highland Park and which in turn was bought by the Edrington Group in 1999 , the distillery.

The Macallan has always been popular with blender masters who still use it in their blended whiskeys. It first appeared as a bottled single malt whiskey in the 1960s, but initially only in the Speyside whiskey region. It was not until 1980 that the decision was made to launch The Macallan on a larger scale within the UK.

production

The distillery has two mashing vats ( mash tuns ) (together 12.6 t) and fermentation tanks 22 ( wash backs ) (together 770,000 l). It is distilled in seven wash stills (12,000 l each) and 14 spirit stills (4,000 l each). The total production is 5.5 million liters per year.

Others

The Macallan has produced the most expensive whiskey in the world to date. The 60-year-old "Macallan Valerio Adami 1926" was sold at the Edinburgh auction for 848,750 pounds, the equivalent of around 947,000 euros. In 2019, a single bottle of the 60-year-old "Macallan 1926 Single Malt" was even sold for 1.5 million pounds (around € 1.74 million) at auction.

A 50 year old Macallan is James Bond's favorite drink in Skyfall .

18 year old Macallan is Harvey Specter's favorite drink from the Suits series .

From 2012 Macallan replaced its previous bottlings with the 1824 Series without any age information. All variants stored for less than 18 years (Sherry Oak 10, Sherry Oak 10 Cask Strength, Sherry Oak 12, Fine Oak 10, Fine Oak 12, Fine Oak 15, Fine Oak 17) were replaced by the four color-coded mixtures The Macallan Gold , Amber , Sienna and Ruby replaced. All four colors are based on storage and storage time in the different barrels. Unlike most other Scottish distilleries, Macallan does not color its whiskeys.

The 1824 Series has been discontinued since mid-2018 and Macallan is again focusing on a core range with age information. While the classic Sherry Oak is now back in the standard range for 12 years , the Fine Oak series has been replaced. Instead, Macallan is now again emphasizing the different barrel types as it was before 2012 and is offering the Double Cask and Triple Cask Matured variants in different age groups.
