Skyfall (from English sky "sky" and fall "fall", "fall") is a British agent thriller . In it, the secret agent James Bond is confronted with the former secret service member Raoul Silva, who wants to kill Bond's superior M. Skyfall is the 23rd film in the original James Bond series from Eon Productions . It was released on the 50th anniversary of the Bond film series and premiered on October 23, 2012 in London . The German-language premiere was on October 30, 2012 in Berlin . Sam Mendes was the first to direct a Bond film, while Daniel Craig starred for the third time.

The film grossed over $ 1.1 billion, a multiple of its production costs. It received mostly positive reviews and was awarded two Oscars and a Golden Globe , among other things .

action

The British MI6 -Agent James Bond and his colleague Eve track in Turkey the assassin Patrice, a hard drive stolen with secret data. This could reveal the identities of all agents who were smuggled into terrorist organizations. Bond can catch the thief on the roof of a moving train. At the urging of her superior M , Eve shoots Patrice, but meets Bond, who then falls from the train into a river. Patrice escapes with the hard drive, the missing Bond is declared dead.

Three months later, the secret service coordinator Gareth Mallory is said to persuade the previous boss M to resign early and honorably because of the hard drive loss and to monitor the activities of MI6 during the transition period. Shortly thereafter, a bomb attack rocked MI6 headquarters. Bond, who survived the fall and went into hiding, then returns to London and reports to M for duty. Despite his bad shape, she reinstated him and sent him to Shanghai , where Patrice will arrive, according to CIA information.

Arriving in Shanghai, Bond finds Patrice and watches him assassinate . A fight ensues between the two in which Patrice falls to his death without revealing his employer to Bond. A short time later, a video appeared on the Internet that revealed the identities of five agents and announced that five more agents would be exposed for each following week. The gaming chip of a casino , finds the Bond in equipping Patrice, leads him to Macau . When he presented the chip to the casino, he was paid four million euros for the murder carried out by Patrice. Sévérine, a woman who was already present at the murder attempt in Shanghai, makes hints about the mastermind, her boss, whom Bond should liquidate for her. After Bond got rid of the guard Sévérines, she takes him on a sailing yacht to an abandoned island. On the way there, they are captured by the henchmen of the unknown wire-puller and led to him. It is the cyber terrorist Raoul Silva, who tells Bond that he used to work under M for MI6. He was caught on an assignment by the Chinese secret service and tortured for months, but M dropped him. Now he's out for revenge. He shoots Sévérine in front of Bond. Bond then kills Silva's guards. When Bond shows up, he arrests Silva and then takes him to England.

The headquarters of MI6, now temporarily in former bunkers of the London Underground network set up, studied Q the laptop from Silva. A special program receives access to the security system via the network and enables Silva, who is held in a glass cell, to escape through the sewer system. Bond realizes that Silva planned everything and takes up the chase. Silva sets out to kill M, who is in a hearing by the interior minister and the secret service committee. Bond appears just in time, can fend off the attack together with Gareth Mallory and Eve and escape with M. In order to be able to go underground for the time being, he brings her to his old home in the Scottish highlands . At the same time, he lets Q set an inconspicuous track on the Internet that is supposed to lure Silva there.

Bond and M eventually arrive at Skyfall , a lonely mansion where Bond spent his childhood. Here they meet the gamekeeper Kincade, who raised Bond after his parents died. The three of them prepare for the impending attack on Silva by preparing the abandoned property with booby traps, among other things .

Despite weak and largely improvised armament, they can withstand the attack of Silva's vanguard. M is wounded and flees with the gamekeeper through a secret tunnel behind a priest's hole . Silva is now attacking Skyfall herself . He lets his men fire from the helicopter at Bond, who is holed up in the house. With the help of gas cylinders , Bond can blow up the helicopter, but his parents' house is also destroyed in the process. He himself can escape through the tunnel. In a scuffle with one of Silva's men, both break into a frozen lake and Bond barely manages to save himself. Silva meanwhile pursues M and the gamekeeper to a chapel . Here he tries to force M to shoot himself and himself with a bullet at the same time when Bond appears and kills Silva with a knife throw. M dies shortly afterwards in Bond's arms from her previous injuries.

Back in London, Bond enters the anteroom of M's office, which is now housed again in a historic building in Whitehall . Bond's colleague Eve, now M's new assistant, introduces herself by her full name as Eve Moneypenny . Then Bond takes his next assignment from Gareth Mallory, the new M.

History of origin

Final version of the script dated August 15, 2011

Pre-production

Michael G. Wilson is producer for the 14th time in a row and his stepsister Barbara Broccoli is producer for the ninth time in a row. At the end of 2008, the screenwriters Peter Morgan and Robert Wade were already working on a treatment entitled Once Upon a Spy and delivered it on November 2nd, 2009. The text, which deals with a past indiscretion of Ms in Russia, which could endanger the reputation of MI6, did not meet with much approval from the producers and was rejected. In 2009, Peter Morgan, Neal Purvis and Robert Wade started writing the script. After Morgan quit because of a delay in work caused by financial problems in the film studio, John Logan subsequently joined the writing team.

The director Sam Mendes at the premiere of the film

In early 2010 it was announced that Sam Mendes would direct the film. Leading actor Daniel Craig chose the director himself. Mendes already had clear ideas about the plot and gave the scriptwriters the directive that the plot should revolve around Bond. On November 18, 2010, Purvis and Wade delivered the first complete draft of the script under the title Nothing is Forever (German translation: Nothing is forever ), whereby elements of the later film were already present. In this version, Raoul Sousa, later renamed Silva, wants to plant a bomb in a subway in Barcelona , which serves as a diversionary maneuver to bring M to a shelter and kill her there.

Before that, however, the film studios Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer filed for bankruptcy on April 18, 2010, as they had lost 3.7 billion US dollars in the previous year due to the financial crisis . For this reason, the start of filming has been put on hold for the time being. In an interview with IGN Entertainment on October 7, 2010 , David G. Wilson, son of producer Michael G. Wilson , announced that production was slowly starting up again.

This was made possible by the studio finding a co-producer in Sony Pictures who was willing to pay for the film in exchange for 50 percent of the film rights. Sony Pictures also announced that it will be available in this role for the follow-up film.

According to initial information, the film should have a budget of around 135 million US dollars. Other sources later reported a budget of $ 150 million, $ 200 million, or $ 230 million.

In addition, a large part of the financing came from product placement . So is drinking Bond, who so far mainly vodka martini preferred, including a beer brand Heineken . According to the production company, this change corresponds to the more pithy ideal of masculinity conveyed by Daniel Craig. Craig himself sees it rather critically, but at the same time justifies it as financially necessary. Skyfall is thus replacing Minority Report as the film with the highest share of funding through product placements. While there was a sum of the equivalent of 17 million euros, Skyfall had around twice that amount.

For license agreements , a contract of 45 million US dollars should have been concluded with Heineken, which would be less than the amount of the contracts for the two previous films. In return, a commercial was created with Bérénice Marlohe , which roughly builds on the plot of the film.

In May 2011, Roger Deakins was hired as cameraman, who had already worked with director Sam Mendes. Jany Temime acted as costume designer . She faced the difficulty of, on the one hand, maintaining the classic style and, on the other, letting Bond play in 2012.

Until the final announcement of the title, the film was referred to as Bond 23 according to the serial number within the film series by Eon . or James Bond 23 After the registration of various domains (including jamesbond-skyfall.com , skyfall-film.net or skyfall-themovie.com ) had indicated this in August 2011, the official title Skyfall became known on November 3rd of the same year given. In the German-speaking countries, the title is marked as part of a series by an extension to the title, so that here the official title is James Bond 007: Skyfall .

occupation

After the films Casino Royale (2006) and Quantum of Solace (2008), Daniel Craig took on the role of agent James Bond for the third time . Although he had announced in advance of filming that the film would be his last appearance as Bond, he changed his mind during the filming and committed in September 2012 to play James Bond in two more films.

For the seventh and last time , Judi Dench embodied M , head of the secret service and Bond's superior. Her successor will be Ralph Fiennes , who made his debut in Skyfall as intelligence coordinator.

Javier Bardem , who was nominated for an Oscar in 2011 , played the role of villain Raoul Silva . He had already been offered to play James Bond himself in previous films. However, Bardem had refused at the time because, in his opinion, it was not the right time.

In July 2011 it was announced that Naomie Harris would take on the role of secretary Miss Moneypenny , who initially worked as an agent, as the fourth actress . Harris said at the time that she wanted to do all the stunts herself and therefore trained for it. Nevertheless, it was partially doubled by rally professional Mark Higgins for a chase . In August of the same year it was published that Ben Whishaw had been engaged for the project and would be cast for the role of the new Q.

Shortly before shooting began, the until then still relatively unknown French actress Bérénice Marlohe , who had previously mainly worked in French series, was introduced as Bond girl Sévérine. She had sought the role for six years and contacted casting director Debbie McWilliams through Facebook , sending her clips of films she had appeared in.

The multiple producer of the film series Michael G. Wilson has made a cameo in a Bond film for the seventh time in a row .

Filming

The National Gallery in London
Kapalı Çarşı ”, the Grand Bazaar in Istanbul

As with most of Eon's previous Bond films, the studio recordings for Skyfall were recorded at Pinewood Studios in Buckinghamshire , England . Equipment from ARRI was also used for the shooting of Quantum of Solace .

Filming began on November 7, 2011 in Whitehall . Subsequently, Southwark , the National Gallery , Smithfield Meat Market , St Bartholomew's Hospital , Canary Wharf , the Department of Energy and Climate Change, Charing Cross Underground Station and the Old Royal Naval College , Arklow Street im Filmed in the Deptfort district and in various locations near and in London. The Pinewood Studios have been converted into a station on the London Underground and the Port of Macau .

Duntrune Castle in Argyll and Bute was initially planned as the filming location for the final in Scotland . In November 2011, the film team decided at short notice to forego this location. Instead, the eponymous manor house with chapel and entrance gate with deer as a backdrop was built in the heather landscape of Hankley Common in the southern English county of Surrey, made of plaster and plywood. After filming ended, it was set on fire and burned for two nights.

At the beginning of February, a day of shooting took place in Glen Coe , Scotland , to create the approach sequence to Skyfall shown in the film . The shooting was then moved to Istanbul, Turkey. The producers announced that this was the favorite city of Bond creator Ian Fleming and that it was chosen as the location in his honor for 50 years of Bond films. However, India, with the railway line between Mumbai and Goa , was originally planned as the location for the opening sequence. However, local authorities argued that the scenes could create a misleading picture of the country.

During a car chase scene that was filmed in Adana - in the film this city serves as the backdrop for Istanbul - a car in which director Mendes was sitting rammed an extras at high speed . He was seriously injured and rushed to hospital and filming was suspended for an hour. During the filming there, a group of young people was able to film a scene despite countermeasures. The Turkish television broadcaster CNN-Türk released these recordings on March 22, 2012.

The setting for the scenes on the deserted island in the South China Sea was modeled on the Japanese island of Hashima .

From April 16, 2012, shooting continued for three weeks in Istanbul's Eminönü district . Already on the second there shooting the second accident occurred on the set than on a roof at the Grand Bazaar "Kapali Carsisi" a stunt man lost control of his motorcycle and drove in an approximately 330-year-old Crystal shop window, under monument protection standing, so that the Filming had to be interrupted again.

The work was completed on May 19, 2012 in Istanbul after a total of 128 days of shooting, although it was scheduled for 133 days.

Post production and marketing

The film was not only released in standard definition, but is also the first Bond film ever to be shown in various cinemas under the original title Skyfall: The IMAX Experience in a post-processed, enlarged IMAX format.

Thomas Newman , composer of the soundtrack

For the first time since 1997, at the director's request , the film music was no longer composed by David Arnold . He is succeeded by Thomas Newman , with whom Mendes had already worked in four films. Newman's work previously focused mostly on film music for dramas , family films or comedies . The soundtrack was released under the Sony Music label on October 26, 2012 in Germany.

The theme song Skyfall is interpreted by the British singer Adele . It was released on October 5, 2012, the 50th anniversary of the premiere of the first James Bond film, at 12:07 a.m. London time. The song reached first place in the German and Swiss single charts.

Various websites were launched in the course of promoting the film. Heineken, among others, put the interactive page Crack the Case online, in which the plot of the commercial with Bérénice Marlohe was continued interactively. Activision announced in April 2012 that it would be releasing a James Bond best-of video game under the title 007 Legends , which contains elements from Skyfall and five other films. In addition, a short film was made especially for the opening ceremony of the 2012 Summer Olympics , showing Daniel Craig escorting Queen Elizabeth II as James Bond to the Olympic Stadium in her helicopter .

The first teaser trailer was presented by Bérénice Marlohe on May 21, 2012 at the Cannes International Film Festival . The first trailer in IMAX format, which also offered deeper insights into the plot of the film, was released during the course of the San Diego Comic-Con International .

publication

Skyfall was released for the 50th anniversary of the Bond film series

The day before the announced premiere, the film was shown at a donation gala in Belgrade , Serbia . On October 23, 2012, Skyfall was officially presented at the Royal Albert Hall in London in the presence of the main actors and the director. Prince Charles was also present as a guest of honor . The proceeds were donated to former members of the MI6 , MI5 and GCHQ intelligence services .

The film premiered in German on October 30, 2012 at Potsdamer Platz in Berlin. Sam Mendes, Barbara Broccoli, Daniel Craig and Bérénice Marlohe were present. In Austria appeared Skyfall on November 1st. The US premiere in New York had to be canceled due to Hurricane Sandy .

In China , the film was only released on January 21, 2013, with some delay and in some cases censored. The scene in which Patrice kills a Chinese security guard in a skyscraper in Shanghai was omitted. Likewise, the subtitles often do not correspond to the text in the original English version. For example, an allusion to prostitution in Macau and a scene in which Silva speaks about torture by the Chinese secret service have been changed.

Home theater exploitation began on February 12, 2013 in the United States and six days later in the United Kingdom.

On February 28 of the same year, Skyfall was released in Germany and Austria on DVD and Blu-ray under the label of 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment, as well as in a special steel box edition and in a Blu-ray and DVD collector's box with the films Casino Royale and Quantum of Solace . In German-language free TV, Skyfall was shown for the first time on January 1, 2015 in prime time on Swiss broadcaster SRF Zwei and Austrian broadcaster ORF one . The ZDF exuded the film on January 6, 2015 on German television.

analysis

Title sequence

The title sequence starts when Bond, hit by a bullet, falls into the river. Appropriately, the first words of the title song are "This is the end" ("This is the end"). Accompanied by the title song, images are shown that are initially not apparent to the viewer, but which represent elements of the plot from the perspective of Bond. Daniel Kleinman , designer of the title sequence, wanted to use it to create images that can be recognized and classified when watching the film. Nevertheless, the sequence is also based on the title design of classic Bond films and the typical iconography associated with them . In addition, the images are based on near-death experiences , for which Kleinman was inspired by the experiences of real people. In this way, Bond's feelings are meant to be reflected.

Themes and motifs

New interpretation of classic elements

The cast of the renewed characters (from left to right): Ralph Fiennes (M), Ben Whishaw (Q) and Naomie Harris (Miss Moneypenny)

In Skyfall , Quartiermeister Q and MI6 secretary Miss Moneypenny can be seen for the first time in a Bond film with Daniel Craig in the title role .

The Quartermaster's role, last seen in Die Another Day in 2002 , was changed dramatically when he was incarnated by Ben Whishaw: The new Q is younger than Bond and a computer genius, which means the Quartermaster isn't just about providing in future films must be determined by technology.

The new M, played by Ralph Fiennes, Gareth Mallory, is featured in the film as a former British Army fighter in the Northern Ireland conflict who was held in captivity with the Irish Republican Army for three months during that deployment . He later became the intelligence coordinator and, after the death of the MI6 superiors, became the head of the intelligence agency himself. With his familiarity with the war, the filmmakers created an opportunity to have M actively intervene in future films.

The character Miss Moneypenny, secretary of MI6, is also being modernized: Instead of a more passive secondary character with whom Bond flirts, she is used as a “sexy sidekick” at Skyfall . The film begins with their collaboration, in which Moneypenny is directly involved in the operation. At a later date, Moneypenny is also involved in a shootout, in which she actively intervenes. As with the new M , the possibility was created to let the secretary appear more in later films as the person who acts and influences the events. For the first time she is black and instead of wearing the first name Jane , as in Die Another Day , her first name in Skyfall is Eve. Despite the importance of this supporting role, viewers only learn her name at the end of the film.

In addition, the original James Bond classic car Aston Martin DB5 with the registration number BMT 216A from the films Goldfinger , Fireball and Goldeneye reappears in Skyfall for the anniversary , but for the first time since Goldfinger it is a key element of the plot. The car, the use of which Mendes described as a personal tribute to the film, was taken from the museum for the film. As in Goldfinger , machine guns built into the front of the car are used.

Bond's relationship with M

Another central theme of the film is the relationship between Bond's superior M and the agent himself. Producer Barbara Broccoli describes their relationship as the “most significant relationship in [Bond ]’s life”. Judi Dench, who had played this role since 1995, continuously moved to the center of the films, and the relationship with Bond became increasingly intense, according to the filmmakers. While Bond is first asked if M is his mother in Quantum of Solace , M's motherhood role in Skyfall becomes a major theme of the film. Bond has looked at her like a mother since his parents died in childhood. Silva even calls her mother and accuses her of having betrayed him as her son, and is therefore out for revenge. This also reveals a certain brotherhood between Silva and Bond.

M is the only person who is actually authorized to give instructions to Bond. According to Barbara Broccoli, they have a family relationship with each other. She also claims that this relationship "is a part of Bond's life that he has locked away since his parents died."

Leading actor Daniel Craig sees that their relationship is "one of mutual respect." They both know that when the going gets tough, "one of them must make a sacrifice". Because of this, it is difficult for them to have an emotional relationship with one another. According to Craig, this relationship is shaped in Skyfall : Since M has to make sacrifices for a mission, Bond becomes one of them. The main actor also says that "in better times and under different circumstances" both could have been very close, but that this is "the tragedy of this relationship".

Director Sam Mendes commented, "Your relationship has to hang in limbo just as your relationship with your parents will never come to an end." Mendes sees the reason that Bond returns after his supposed death is that he would otherwise be alone. According to Mendes, however, Bond doesn't know why he returned. When Kincade tells M about Bond's past and he tells her that Bond hid in a cave for two days after the death of his parents, M is seen staring into a hole. According to Mendes, "the puzzle is finally coming together: when that boy came out of this cave ... he was Bond".

Daniel Craig said M and Bond do not reveal each other until the end, when M dies, "truly a bond with each other".

Further

A central motif of the film is the question of the topicality of the character James Bond in the context of current affairs. While this question has already been implied in GoldenEye , the issue is made clear in Skyfall . Bond is portrayed as an aged agent who is no longer up to the challenges. Against M and MI6 the accusation is made that they are no longer up to date. This problem runs through the entire film. As a contrast, Bond and M are juxtaposed with well-known characters from previous films in a modernized form. These should deliberately break with the expectations of the audience. For example, instead of the expected gadgets, Bond only received a tracking transmitter and a signature pistol from the new Q , essentially conventional technology, while they were looking at the paintingThe Fighting Temeraire tugged to her last berth to be broken up ” by JM William Turner on the one decommissioned warship is towed to its last berth for scrapping. But Gareth Mallory and Moneypenny also initially doubt the success of the outdated approaches of Bond and M. In the course of the film, they have to prove that their methods are effective and that they have a place in the modern world.

It was particularly important to Mendes to shed light on the psyche of James Bond in order to approximate the literary character from the Fleming novels. He wanted to show that this is not just a gigolo . The weather in London therefore also stands for Bond's mood and is continuously improving: While it rains at the beginning after Bond's supposed death, at the end he stands in the sunlight on the roof of the MI6 headquarters. In addition, for the first time James Bond receives a background story that illuminates his past.

Raoul Silva, who only appears in person after the first half of the film, should initially appear ridiculous to the audience and Bond, according to Mendes, but should prove to be a dangerous opponent of Bond at the latest when he breaks out of the temporary MI6 headquarters. Through his initial cyber whistleblowing , through which he unmasked numerous agents, his style was made contemporary, believes Christof Siemes, an author of the time . Andreas Borcholte, author of the weekly magazine Der Spiegel , compares him with the WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange , who, like the villain in the film, caused a sensation with the publication of state secrets. According to Silva actor Bardem, his character should appear glamorous on the outside in an artificial way, but spoiled on the inside. In addition, Silva was created as a negative reflection of Bond's character, which not only counteracts the character traits of the title hero, but also has a possible homosexual orientation, which at the same time questions Bond's sexuality.

Silva's accomplice Patrice was deliberately created without dialogue by the scriptwriter Logan - like the henchman Oddjob in Goldfinger . The author believes that both Oddjob and Patrice have personalities who express themselves through their actions, making spoken text redundant.

In an article in Stern magazine , the film title is seen not only in connection with the mansion of the same name, but also as a metaphorical reference to Bond's fall at the beginning of the film and the resulting personal crisis. The focus is on the insight into Bond's past, which is “not necessarily rosy”. Both magazines, however, find that Bond is getting back on his feet when he returns to MI6.

The critical examination of the character James Bond in Skyfall thus extends to all areas that were considered to have been established by previous films.

Skyfall received mostly positive reviews from critics. As The Times wrote : “Skyfall is a great British bulldog from film. From the moment the orchestral sound of Adele comes in and sends a nostalgic chill down the spine of the entire audience, we know this will be the triumphant return of classic Bond. ”Regarding the main actor, the newspaper said that“ apart from early Connery, [...] none better than Daniel Craig ”.

The criticism of Digital Spy described the film as a significant improvement over its predecessor Quantum Solace . Adele's theme song was also praised.

Criticism of the playlist found parallels in the film with the Batman films by Christopher Nolan . In Skyfall, both the positive and the negative characteristics can be found that exist in that trilogy. In addition, the climax was not liked, which had become rather unspectacular. Nevertheless, the magazine comes to a positive conclusion overall and writes: "Mendes does a lot more right than he does wrong, and has thus found a new identity for the franchise."

The lexicon of international films praised: “The 23rd film in the '007' series combines the playful homage to tradition and show values with an exciting story about the conflict between pragmatism and emotion, old and new. Intelligently and entertainingly, he oscillates between spectacular action and a pointed exchange of blows, with the classic James Bond film staff experiencing a delightful reinterpretation. "

The magazine Stern said: "A large part of the entertainment value is also in the sometimes extraordinary acting."

Susanne Hermanski, author of the Süddeutsche Zeitung , praised the “grandiose pictures of the cameraman” and “smart, thoroughly detailed dialogues that are worthy of Ian Fleming”. The author came to the conclusion that “it has not been so sensual [...] in a long time a Bond adventure”.

Gregor Wossilus, critic of the film magazine Kino Kino des Bayerischen Fernsehens, praised the film as worth seeing, but also remarked that the film will divide the many Bond fans: “Mendes grants his characters more moments of doubt than any Bond film before. This is exciting. And at the same time the aspect on which the opinion of the audience is likely to be most clearly divided. Does a Bond film need so much emotion? Does it make sense to even explain Bond's origins in the last third of the film? Does that disenchant the myth of the superhero James Bond? ”But Wossilus also praised:“ The film looks excellent, the action sequences offer thrills, film composer Thomas Newman often throws in the famous Bond theme, and Bond has rediscovered his humor ”.

Andreas Borcholte from Der Spiegel magazine wrote that Mendes managed to shoot an action thriller that "adapts the ultimate cinema macho to the zeitgeist". He also found words of praise for the portrayal of Bond: "Daniel Craig, who can master virile and fragile at the same time, once again proves to be the perfect cast."

In his review, Rüdiger Suchsland came to the conclusion that Skyfall was “an excellent, very entertaining film - but perhaps not a James Bond”. He described the film as "too self-confident cinema-Icarus" and criticized Mendes for his attempt to "reinvent Bond". However, he praised Javier Bardem, who played his role "wonderfully, super villainous with the nasty charm of madness". In conclusion, he wrote in his review that the film "is always wonderful and sometimes really clever ...".

The score for the 23rd James Bond film was also largely received positively by the critics. James Christopher Monger, an author of Allmusic , wrote: "(T) he occasional high points of the past [...] and some really explosive [...] and dark [...] moments help balance the score for routine passages." By James Southall , an author of Movie Wave , the score has been described as "music that is not only dynamic, but" also as "very modern action thriller music". Adele's song was also largely praised. The star describes it as "(e) in instrumental fireworks of winds, strings and a whole choir", which emphasizes "the drama of the song", while the mirror in it "pays homage to the great Bond- Songs from the sixties and seventies ”. The piece was received more negatively by the Süddeutsche Zeitung on the grounds that the song was "(s) rather classic", but even "a bit boring".

The shooting for the next film James Bond 007: Specter began after the press conference on December 4, 2014 on December 8, 2014. Sam Mendes initially refused to direct again because he had already implemented all the ideas for James Bond in Skyfall . Still, writers Neal Purvis and Robert Wade announced at the Doha Tribeca Film Festival that Mendes was working with John Logan on a story for the follow-up film. On July 11, 2013, it was finally confirmed that Sam Mendes would also direct the 24th James Bond film. In the meantime, Christopher Nolan had been offered the directorial position.
