Daniel Wroughton Craig (born March 2, 1968 in Chester , Cheshire ) is a British actor . He was best known for his role as James Bond , which he has played since 2006.

Life

Early years

Craig was born to steel worker Timothy John Wroughton Craig and his wife, art teacher Olivia Dana Williams Craig. After his parents separated, he and his older sister Lea grew up in an artistic environment, first in Liverpool and later in Hoylake, Wirral , with his mother and stepfather Max Blond, an artist known on the island. At the age of six, his musical talent was particularly encouraged by his mother. He was also a rugby player at Hoylake Rugby Club during his high school years .

He left school at the age of 16, applied successfully to the National Youth Theater and moved to London . He received his acting training from 1988 to 1991 at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London , where Ewan McGregor , Orlando Bloom and Joseph Fiennes also graduated. This was followed by theater appearances, including at the famous Old Vic Theater .

Start of career

His film career began in 1992 with a supporting role in John G. Avildsen's drama In the Shine of the Sun ; In 1996 he starred in the nine-part BBC miniseries Our Friends in the North . This was followed by appearances in larger productions such as Elizabeth (1998) and Der Schützengraben (1999), through which he became internationally known. He subsequently took on supporting roles in commercially or artistically successful films such as Lara Croft: Tomb Raider and Road to Perdition . In 2000 he received the Shooting Star Award of the European Film Promotion as one of the best young European actors at the Berlinale and in the same year was honored as best leading actor at the British Independent Film Awards for his performance in Some Voices (2000). For his portrayal of a man in Roger Michell's film The Mother , who falls into a love affair with his girlfriend's mother, Craig was nominated for the 2004 European Film Awards Audience Award. With the British film Layer Cake in 2004 Craig celebrated a great commercial success.

James Bond

On October 14, 2005, it was announced in London that Craig would succeed Pierce Brosnan as the sixth actor of the fictional British secret agent James Bond . More roles

In 2005, Craig stood in front of the camera as the Jewish Mossad agent for director Steven Spielberg's Munich . After Craig had finished filming Casino Royale , filming began on the film adaptation of Philip Pullman's novel trilogy His Dark Materials , the first part of which was released in 2007, The Golden Compass . Craig played the role of Lord Asriel, who was played in the stage version by Timothy Dalton , one of Craig's predecessors in the role of James Bond, in 2003 and 2004 at the Royal National Theater in London.

Craig also starred in the Hollywood version of Stieg Larsson's The Blind . The film was directed by David Fincher and was released in German cinemas in January 2012.

Daniel Craig made a cameo as the Stormtrooper in the 2015 film Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which fans jokingly referred to as JB-007. In September 2018 it was announced that he was taking on the lead role in the crime film Knives Out, directed by Rian Johnson . In it he embodies the role of Detective Benoit Blanc , for which he received a nomination for a Golden Globe Award in the category Best Actor - Comedy or Musical .

Private life

From 1992 to 1994 Craig was married to the Scottish actress Fiona Loudon. The relationship resulted in a daughter (* 1992). After the divorce he was the partner of the German actress Heike Makatsch from 1996 to 2004 . From 2005 to 2010 he was in a relationship with the American film producer Satsuki Mitchell. At the end of June 2011, Daniel Craig married his British colleague Rachel Weisz , with whom he had been dating since 2010 and appeared as a married couple in the 2011 mystery thriller Dream House . In 2018 Weisz gave birth to a daughter.

In 2010 he bought an apartment in the Tribeca district of New York for 1.8 million euros. Craig is the Chairman of the Honorary Board of Directors of the anti-human trafficking NGO Stop Trafficking of People (STOP).
