action

Merlin seeks a worthy warrior who should prove himself worthy of Excalibur in order to solve the problems of his time. Unfortunately, Calvin Fuller, an insecure youth who previously had a strikeout in a baseball game , is transported through a crack into the past with the help of an earthquake. After he overpowers the black knight by chance, he is caught on the run by Arthur's guards and taken to his hall, where Arthur wants to thank him for saving his valuable box. But Lord Belasco, who doesn't like the newcomer at all, accuses Calvin of being a spy, which is why he challenges him to a duel. Thanks to his CD player and loud rock music, Calvin wins the duel, so he can stay in the castle. He receives a room and a visit from Princess Katey, who shows him the way to Merlin's old rooms through a secret passage. Merlin himself only exists in a magic well and explains to Calvin that he should help Arthur get back on his path so that Calvin can earn his return trip.

Combat training follows, during which Calvin learns that a tournament has been announced to determine the winner and thus also the future husband of Princess Sarah, so that Camelot's legacy is secured. He then visits the blacksmith to have a second pair of roller blades made so that he can skate through the castle with Katey. Meanwhile, Belasco asks for Sarah's hand and is angry that the decision will be played in a tournament, so he visits Calvin to duel with him again. But a strong karate kick in his soft tissues ends the fight victorious for Calvin. Sarah does not want to marry Belasco because she is in love with someone else who, however, does not correspond to her status . It is Master Kane who has to secretly meet with Princess Sarah again and again. Otherwise he trains Calvin for the tournament.

When Calvin almost injured himself during lance training , he dares to kiss Katey, who, snubbed about it, runs away. After cooking for her, Calvin ordered a mountain bike from the blacksmith on which he took her to picnic. In a village in the province, they experience how the Black Knight is celebrated as a hero after he got food for the farmers. They are surprised that this is cheered, but they assumed that it would be an evil one. They return to the castle, where Katey kisses him and is taken hostage shortly afterwards. Belasco needs leverage to be able to marry Sarah. He blames Calvin and reports to King Arthur that the latter murdered his daughter. But Arthur has long been in the picture and helps Calvin escape from the castle. Both set out to free Katey from her dungeon. Thanks to a modern Swiss Army Knife , Karate and Excalibur, they can defeat the Belasco guards. For this, Calvin is knighted by Arthur .

With the timely arrival on Camelot, Sarah Belasco cancels to become his wife. He is now looking for his salvation in the subsequent tournament, to win her hand and thus also Camelot's future. But Arthur made the tournament accessible to every free man, which is why Master Kane can now also participate. Both are so experienced lance fighters that they eliminate all other opponents and there is a final battle between Kane and Belasco. Belasco then hits Kane hard, so that he believes he is the winner. Since Kane is still on his horse, the fight is not considered lost. Calvin looks after him and finds that Kane has passed out, so he gets on his horse, pits Belasco and knocks him off his horse, defeating him. Out of anger, Belasco wants to attack Calvin with a knife and is just stopped by the Black Knight. Under his mask is Princess Sarah, who Kane chooses as her new husband as the winner of the tournament. Belasco is banished and Calvin can return to his time, shortly before his strikeout. This time, however, he has the confidence to hit a home run with the first throw .

criticism

The film has "little" to do with the original story by Mark Twain, said Caryn James in the New York Times . The film is "sluggish and lame" and "looks cheap." In addition, the film is simply "bad, in the traditional sense."

Although Thomas Ian Nicholas' play was "charmingly reserved," said Hal Hinson of the Washington Post , the film remained "pale." Only Malik had "a few sleazy moments as a villain" and Winslet would "provide the only surprise in the film." . "

The lexicon of international films said that the film was "a tired copy of well-known predecessors that combined teenage drama and Arthurian legend with conventional, sometimes inadequate means".

publication

After its theatrical release on August 11, 1995, the film grossed just over 13 million US dollars . In Germany it was released on January 18, 1996. The film has been available on VHS since September 6, 1996 .
