The torch relay of the 2012 Summer Olympics in the run-up to the XXX. Olympic Games in London took place from May 10 to July 27 2012th After the traditional lighting of the Olympic flame in Olympia , it was carried through Greece in a 3,000-kilometer torch relay from May 10th to 17th . She arrived at Land's End on May 19th . From there the route led through England , Northern Ireland , Scotland and Wales , to the Channel Islands , the Isle of Man , the Orkney Islands , the Shetland Islands and the Hebrides, and in one day through Ireland . The route in Great Britain was around 12,800 kilometers long, there were 8,000 torchbearers on the way. On July 20, the Olympic torch reached the British capital by helicopter at Tower Bridge . Cultural events took place in the evening at 66 of the 70 stage locations.

The torch

The torch, which is 80 centimeters long and weighs 800 grams, was produced in 8,000 copies. It consists of an aluminum alloy with a layer of gold and is perforated with 8000 holes, each of which represents a torch-bearer. The holes not only ensure a better hold, but also ensure that the heat escapes quickly and is not directed downwards.

The triangular shape of the torch represents the three Olympic values (respect, achievement and friendship), the Olympic motto (“ faster, higher, stronger ”), the three London Olympic Games ( 1908 , 1948 , 2012 ) and the vision of the Summer Games 2012 (sport, education and culture). The torch was designed by Edward Barber and Jay Osgerby, and mass production by Tecosim in Basildon , Bullfinch in Birmingham and Premier Sheet Metal in Coventry .

Immediately after the presentation on June 8, 2011, the torch received the derisive name of Golden Cheesegrater ("Golden Cheese Grater").

particularities

The Olympic flame was brought from Athens to the RNAS Culdrose military airfield by British Airways civil aircraft , which was given an IATA airport code for that flight only . There London Mayor Boris Johnson , Organization President Sebastian Coe and soccer player David Beckham received the flame.

Some unusual modes of transport were also planned for the torch relay. In Bristol Harbor , the flame was to be transported in a speedboat , in Menai Strait in a Royal National Lifeboat Institution lifeboat , across the Windermere in a steamship, in a punt on the Cam at Cambridge and on the Medway at Maidstone in a rowboat become.

It was planned to run the flame on rails with different steam locomotives and on different gauges. The LMS - Royal Scot Class No. 6115 locomotive was supposed to carry them on the East Coast Main Line . Further journeys with standard gauge museum railways were planned on the Great Central Railway , on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway and the Severn Valley Railway . Of the narrow-gauge museum railways, the Ffestiniog Railway and the Cleethorpes Coast Light Railway should be considered. The Aberystwyth Cliff Railway , East Hill Cliff Railway and Great Orme Tramway funiculars , the Snowdon Mountain Railway, should also be used . as well as the Blackpool tram and the Manx Electric Railway . On the 67th day of the torch relay, the torch was transported between Wimbledon and Wimbledon Park on the London Underground .

Particular road vehicles to be used were a tram in Mumbles and an open double decker bus in the rural areas of Cumbria and London. A motorcycle team was to be used on the Tourist Trophy circuit on the Isle of Man , a Paralympic bike on the Brands Hatch motor racing circuit and a mountain bike on Hadleigh Farm in Essex .

The Tower Bridge with the Olympic rings

It was planned that riders would carry the torch on racehorses around the Cheltenham and Chester racetracks and on a pony in Aberaeron . The Douglas Bay Horse Tramway , a horse tram in Douglas, should also be used . The torch was to be transported by air by means of a rope bridge from Newcastle upon Tyne to Gateshead and in a cable car to the Heights of Abraham in Derbyshire . On the Middlesbrough transporter bridge it was also supposed to be transported over the tees .

On July 20, the torch reached the British capital by helicopter from Guildford to Tower Bridge . During the flight the flame was carried in a miner's lamp . There, a Royal Navy soldier roped down with the torch from the helicopter and took them to the dungeon of the tower , where the 4,700 Olympic medals had been stored since the beginning of July. From July 21st, the torch passed through a 321-kilometer route in the hands of 982 torch-bearers in all of London's individual districts before reaching the Olympic Stadium on July 27th for the opening ceremony.
