Brentwood is a city in south Essex in England , United Kingdom . It is about 25 km from London . Brentwood, with its 2.125 hectares of woodland , is part of the “green belt” around London and has a total of 44,800 inhabitants. It forms a large part of Essex's Borough of Brentwood .

Brentwood is the seat of the Roman Catholic diocese of Brentwood . The Cathedral of St. Mary and St. Helen was built from 1989 to 1991 according to plans by the architect Quinlan Terry in a neoclassical style with elements of the Italian Renaissance and English Baroque.

Infrastructure

The city can be reached via the M25 , A12 and A127. London Gatwick and Heathrow Airports are over an hour's drive away and Stansted Airport is only half an hour away. The urban train station on the Great Eastern Main Line connects Brentwood with Liverpool Street in London in just 35 minutes. There are also several bus connections.

history

In the city one was ax from the Bronze Age found. The first settlers in this area were the Saxons . The city was founded in the 12th century. In 1227 Henry III. granted the town market rights. The ruins of the cathedral built by Thomas Becket are still preserved from the 12th century . It served as a residence for the people who made pilgrimages to Canterbury . During the Peasants' Revolt uprising , Brentwood was the meeting place for the insurgents. The population more than doubled between 1800 and 1841 from 1007 to over 2300. In 1901 the place had 4932 inhabitants.
