The Great Eastern Main Line is a major railway line in Great Britain . It runs from Liverpool Street Station in London in a north-east direction to Ipswich and Norwich . The line is mainly used for commuter traffic, but is also an important route for freight traffic.

Trains run by the Abellio Greater Anglia railway company and a few from c2c . The line, which is electrified at 25 kV 50 Hz, has four tracks between London and Shenfield , with two tracks each serving long-distance and suburban traffic. The suburban traffic has been operated under the TfL Rail brand in advance of Crossrail by MTR Corporation since May 31, 2015 .

history

The oldest section of the Great Eastern Main Line - between Mile End and Romford - was built in 1839 by the Eastern Counties Railway (ECR). The terminus in London was initially Bishopsgate station, until the opening of Liverpool Street station in 1874. In 1862 the ECR merged with other companies to form the Great Eastern Railway . This in turn went into 1923 in the London and North Eastern Railway (LNER).

After nationalization in 1948, the line was owned by the British Railways . In 1997, after privatization, it was transferred to two different companies: While First Great Eastern was responsible for suburban traffic and medium distances, the long-distance trains were operated by Anglia Railways . Both concessions were merged in 2004 and awarded to one ( National Express East Anglia ) at the new tender , which ceased operations on February 5, 2012 and was replaced by Abellio Greater Anglia.
