Ipswich [ˈɪpswɪtʃ] is a town and the administrative seat of the county of Suffolk in East Anglia , England .

Ipswich is at the mouth of the River Orwell .
history
During archaeological excavations in Ipswich Stone Age , Iron Age and Roman finds were made. The Anglo-Saxon settlement is known as "Gippeswic" (Latinized probably from Gippevicum or Gypsuicum ). King John Ohneland granted the town town rights in 1200. Over the next four centuries the town developed a lively trade of Suffolk cloth with the European continent. Around 1380 Geoffrey Chaucer satirized the merchants of Ipswich in the Canterbury Tales . In Ipswich there was a branch of the Hanseatic League . Cardinal Thomas Wolsey , son of a butcher, was born in Ipswich around 1475. He founded the city's college in 1528 . In 1555, the Ipswich Martyrs were burned as Protestants for their beliefs. From 1611 to 1634 most of the emigrants were shipped from Ipswich to the New World . This was done through the organization of the brothers Samual and Nathaniel Ward. A city of the same name was founded in Massachusetts . The city has had a brewery, Greene King Brewery , since 1746 .
The painters John Constable and Thomas Gainsborough lived and worked in Ipswich. In 1835 Charles Dickens spent some time in Ipswich and incorporated these memories into his novel The Pickwickier . The world's first lawn mower was produced in Ipswich in 1832.
Ipswich still has a trading port that handles several million tons of cargo every year.
Murder series 2006
In late 2006, five female corpses were discovered in Ipswich who had been identified as drug addicted prostitutes . Since they were all found dead within ten days within a radius of 15 kilometers, the police suspected that it was a serial murder . There was a worldwide sensational manhunt by the British police authorities and Steven Wright was finally sentenced to life imprisonment.

The local football club is Ipswich Town . The American football club Ipswich Cardinals became British champions in 1990. The Ipswich Witches speedway team starts in the British Speedway Premier League. This speedway club is one of the best known and most traditional British speedway clubs.
