Ian Storey-Moore (born January 17, 1945 in Ipswich ) is a former English football player and coach .
Career as a player
Nottingham Forest
Ian Storey-Moore moved in 1962 from his youth club Scunthorpe United to Nottingham Forest and began his playing career there. Forest played at this time in the top English division, the First Division . In the season 1964/65 he reached a fifth place in the table with his team under long-time coach Johnny Carey . The following two seasons were marked by great contrasts. The season 1965/66 completed Forest long in the relegation battle and ended the year only as a table eighteenth. In return, the form curve pointed steeply upwards in the following year and led Storey-Moore and his team to an excellent second place in the table in the 1966/67 season . Only the champions Manchester United around Bobby Charlton , George Best and Denis Law turned out to be too strong opponents. Ian Storey-Moore reached his career best that year in which he scored 21 league goals in 39 games. Nottingham Forest was thus eligible to compete in the 1967/68 trade fair cup and knocked out Eintracht Frankfurt in the first round , before FC Zurich eliminated the European Cup in the second round .
In the 1968/69 season Matt Gillies replaced the previous coach Johnny Carey, but even under him, the club spent the following years in the lower third of the table. In the 1971/72 season , after 15 years of excellence, the relegation to the second division as the table penultimate followed. Ian Storey-Moore moved to Manchester United during the season .
Manchester United
However, United was at this time far from the class of previous years and so there was another relegation for Storey-Moore in the 1973/74 season . He had missed some games because of injuries sustained and changed the following year as a lot of European players in the United States to Chicago Sting . He spent the following years at two smaller clubs as a player-coach, before ending his playing career in 1981 at the age of 36.
English national team
Ian Storey-Moore played his only international match for the Three Lions in 1970 against the Dutch national football team . The game on January 14, 1970 ended in front of about 75,000 spectators at London's Wembley Stadium 0-0. Ian Storey-Moore was one of the best players in the team of the then reigning world champions England on January 14, 1970. The German referee Heinz Siebert (from Mannheim) did not recognize a goal by striker Ian Storey-Moore in the 25th minute of the game because of an offside position. The same fate befell the English team captain Bobby Charlton, who overcame the Dutch goalkeeper Jan van Beveren in the 90th minute of the game, but the German referee Heinz Siebert again decided on an offside position.
