Denis Law CBE (born February 24, 1940 in Aberdeen ) is a former Scottish football player . He played for Huddersfield Town (1956-1960), Manchester City (1960/61), AC Turin (1961/62), Manchester United (1962-1973) and Manchester City (1973) from the late 1950s to the early 1970s / 74). With Manchester United he won the FA Cup in 1963 and the English championship in 1965 and 1967. In 1964 he was voted Europe's Footballer of the Year .

Life

As a 15-year-old Law left his Scottish homeland for England and joined the second division club Huddersfield Town . At the age of 17 he signed a professional contract with Bill Shankly's team , who turned the slender youngster into a striker with assertiveness. In his first international match on October 18, 1958 (at the age of 18), Law drew attention to himself as a goalscorer in a 3-0 win over Wales . In 1960 Law left Huddersfield and moved to Manchester City . Just a year later, the extremely enterprising Scot left the British Isles and joined AC Turin . But even here he did not stay long and moved back to England to Manchester United the following year .

This is where his career really got going. At the end of his first season, he won the English Cup after scoring the decisive goal in the final against Leicester City . In Manchester a strong team developed around Bobby Charlton , George Best and Law. At the zenith of his skills, he was considered a striker who quickly capitalized on every mistake made by his opponent. In 1964 he was voted Europe's Footballer of the Year by sports journalists . In 1965 ManUnited secured the English championship. The team from "Old Trafford" was again at the top of the league two years later and caused a sensation in the European Cup in 1968 : Law shot his club into the final, in which he was unable to participate due to a knee operation. The team won 4-1 against Benfica Lisbon without him . After this success, the team went downhill. In 1969, legendary coaching Matt Busby left the club in resignation. Law stayed until 1973 before moving to local rivals Manchester City. Ironically, a goal from Law condemned United in 1974 to relegation to the second division.

The veteran already seemed too old for the Scottish national football team in 1973, but when World Cup qualification was at stake, team manager Willie Ormond brought him back. Law thanked him for the trust and led his team to a 2-1 win in the decisive game against the CSSR . At the World Cup tournament in Germany , the veteran wore the national jersey for the 55th and final time in the game against Zaïre (2-0 for Scotland). Together with Kenny Dalglish he is the record scorer in his country with 30 goals.

Today Denis Law works as a co-commentator for television and radio.

At the 2016 New Year ceremony, Law was named Commander of the British Empire (CBE) by Queen Elizabeth II .
