William "Willie" Esplin Ormond OBE (born February 23, 1927 in Falkirk , † May 4, 1984 in Musselburgh ) was a Scottish football player and football coach .

Career

player

Ormond began his footballing career a year after the end of World War II at FC Stenhousemuir , a club whose location is not far from his birthplace, Falkirk. He didn't even stay there for a year. In November 1946 he moved to league rivals FC Hibernian , where he spent almost his entire subsequent career as a player. In the 1950s, Willie Ormond was one of the Famous Five , five famous attacking players from Hibernian FC who were among the best Scottish footballers, alongside Bobby Johnstone , Lawrie Reilly , Gordon Smith and Eddie Turnbull . During this time he also took with Scotland at the World Cup in 1954 in Switzerland in part. In 1961 Ormond moved again to his hometown club FC Falkirk , where he ended his career a year later.

Between 1954 and 1959 he played six times for the Scottish national team .

Trainer

He took Willie Ormond's first head coach position five years after retiring from St. Johnstone FC . Before that he worked as an assistant coach at FC Falkirk. In 1969 he led St. Johnstone to the final of the Scottish League Cup and third place in the league , which meant a first-time participation in the European Cup . Between 1973 and 1977 he coached the Scottish national team. After his position as national coach, he worked at Heart of Midlothian from 1977 . In 1980 he took a last coaching position at his long-term club FC Hibernian .
