John Prentice (born 1926 in Shotts , Lanarkshire , Scotland , † February 10, 2006 in Australia ) was a Scottish football player and coach.

Career

player

Prentice came in 1944 from the amateur club Carluke Rovers to Heart of Midlothian , but where he could never prevail. Six years later he was signed by the Glasgow Rangers . In 1956 he moved to FC Falkirk within the Scottish Premier League . Here Prentice was also the captain. From 1959 he played another year at FC Dumbarton before ending his active career in 1960.

Trainer

In April 1960, the Scot took over Arbroath FC from the Scottish First Division for the last two games of the season . In his first season he led Arbroath to 12th place in the table. In 1962 he left the club and became the coach of FC Clyde . In March 1966 he was team manager of the Scottish national team and sparked Jock Stein from, in addition to his work as a club coach at Celtic Glasgow had also coached Scotland. Prentice only stayed as national coach for six months and then returned to club football. In 1966 he took over his former club FC Falkirk . Between 1968 and 1971 he coached Dundee FC . From 1971 until the end of his career in 1975 he was once again the trainer for FC Falkirk. In 1987 he moved to Australia, where he died of a brain tumor in 2006 at the age of 79. Prentice had a son named Alan.
