Malcolm George "Malky" Mackay (born February 19, 1972 in Bellshill ) is a former Scottish football player and coach . He has been coaching the Scottish national team on an interim basis since October 2017 , for which he played five international matches in 2004.
Player career
Queen's Park FC and Celtic Glasgow
Malky Mackay began his career at the Scottish third division FC Queen's Park and remained in this division until he moved to Celtic Glasgow in the summer of 1993. With Celtic he won the Scottish Championship in 1997/98 , but never got beyond the status of a substitute player.
Norwich City
After he had switched to the English second division Norwich City on loan shortly before , the club signed him on September 21, 1998 on a permanent contract basis. With his new team he spent the following three years in the midfield of the second division before succeeding in the Football League First Division 2001/02 due to a sixth place in the table, the jump into the play-offs. After a first-round win over Wolverhampton Wanderers, Norwich failed in the final on penalties at Birmingham City. Two seasons later , the 32-year-old Mackay won the second division championship with his team and thus achieved promotion to the Premier League .
West Ham United and Watford FC
On September 10, 2004 Mackay moved to West Ham United and played eighteen league games (two hits) in the Football League Championship 2004/05 . West Ham rose to the first division this season thanks to a 1-0 win in the play-off final over Preston North End, but Malky Mackay was not used in the last games of the season. In August 2005, Watford FC signed him . With his new team he reached the third first division promotion in a row in 2005/06 (3-0 in the play-off final over Leeds United). In the Premier League 2006/07 he played fourteen league games, but rose with Watford as bottom of the table in the second division. After the 2007/08 season he ended his playing career.
Coaching career
Watford FC
After he was briefly active as an interim coach at Watford FC in November 2008 , Malky Mackay was introduced on June 15, 2009 as the club's new head coach. The Football League Championship 2009/10 ended the team under their new coach only in 16th place in the table. A year later , Watford finished the season in fourteenth.
Cardiff City
On June 17, 2011, league rivals Cardiff City signed him . He led the Welsh club in the Football League Championship 2011/12 to sixth place and as a result reached the play-offs, but failed there prematurely at West Ham United . In the League Cup 2011/12 he led his team to the final, but lost the game on penalties in front of 89,044 spectators at Wembley against favorites Liverpool . Back in December 2011, Mackay was voted November coach of the month in the second division. On December 27, 2013, Cardiff City's management responded to an ongoing athletic crisis by sacking Mackay until further notice.
Wigan Athletic
In November 2014, Mackay was introduced as the successor to Uwe Rösler as the new manager of Wigan Athletic . He was also released in April 2015.
Scotland
In October 2017 he became the interim coach of the Scottish national team .
