George Elder Burley (born June 3, 1956 in Cumnock ) is a retired Scottish football player . He coached the Scottish national team from January 2008 to November 2009 . Most recently he was the coach of the English second division club Crystal Palace . In 1982 he took part in the World Cup as a member of the Scottish national soccer team.
After failing to qualify for the 2010 World Cup and a 3-0 defeat in Wales , Burley was sacked on November 16, 2009. At the beginning of the Football League Championship 2010/11 he took over the coaching position at the English second division club Crystal Palace . After a less than successful season and a 3-0 defeat against Millwall FC , George Burley was released on January 1, 2011 at Crystal Palace.
Player career
Burley began his career at Ipswich Town . After 13 years and exactly 500 competitive appearances, he moved to Sunderland . He then went to Gillingham and Motherwell . At Ayr United he was hired as a player-coach, but then acted as a player at Falkirk in 1993 and again at Motherwell.
Burley won the FA Cup in 1978 with Ipswich and was subsequently also a Scottish national player. For the Bravehearts he ran a total of eleven times.
In 1972 he went to Ipswich and made his professional debut in 1973 against Manchester United at Old Trafford . In 1978 the Tractor Boys won 1-0 against favorites Arsenal in the FA Cup final. In 1981, when he won the UEFA Cup against AZ Alkmaar in Ipswich Town , he had to pass injured. In the league, Town was only second in the final sprint, while Aston Villa became English champions.
In 1985 Burley moved to Sunderland, and a year later to his Scottish homeland. His last stop was in Colchester, where he was a player-coach.
