John Miller "Ian" McColl (born June 7, 1927 in Alexandria , West Dunbartonshire , † October 25, 2008 ) was a Scottish football player and football coach . He was a national player and later coach of the Scottish national football team .

Career as a footballer

McColl joined Queen's Park FC in 1943 . He also studied civil engineering at the University of Glasgow . He interrupted his studies in favor of his football career, but graduated later. In 1945 McColl moved to the Glasgow Rangers , where he was active for 15 years. In total, he ran in 526 matches for the club; During this time, the defender, who was also a team captain in the 1950s, won six championships, five cup wins and the Scottish League Cup twice with the club . Between 1950 and 1958 he was used 14 times in the national team.

Career as a football coach

After the end of the 1959/1960 season, McColl ended his career as an active player. The following year, the association appointed him coach of the national team. Under his leadership, Scotland won the British Home Championships in 1962 and 1963. In 1965 he was coach of Sunderland FC , where he worked for three years.
