David Moyes (born April 25, 1963 in Bearsden ) is a Scottish football coach and former player . He has been the head coach of West Ham United for the second time since December 29, 2019 .

Player career

During his playing career after his youth at Celtic Glasgow, Moyes was always active below the top division and played for the clubs Cambridge United , Bristol City , Shrewsbury Town , Dunfermline Athletic , Hamilton Academical and most recently for Preston North End , where he started his career in 1998 also ended.

Coaching career

Preston North End

Moyes returned to Preston in 1998 to inherit his predecessor Gary Peters in the third-class Second Division as a coach. He had previously been able to gain experience as an assistant coach at the end of his playing career and was later traded for the assistant position of Alex Ferguson at Manchester United , which was then awarded to Steve McClaren in 1999 .

He led Preston in the 1999/2000 season to win the third division championship and to move up to the second-rate First Division and was able to achieve almost the direct march into the top English division in the following year, when he surprisingly landed with the team in fourth place in the table and thus could participate in the play-off games. There Preston lost in the final 3-0 to Bolton Wanderers and missed Preston's first participation in the major league in 40 years.

Everton FC

After almost another full season at Preston, he was signed by Everton in March 2002 as the successor to Walter Smith , where he had previously been in conversation for the coaching office at Manchester City , Southampton FC and West Ham United . Everton FC had a crisis in the lower half of the table in the 2001/02 season and was only able to finish the season in 15th place in the table. However, the following season was a turning point and Moyes led the club to seventh place.

Moyes gained a good reputation among the supporters in the local Goodison Park and confirmed his prediction before his commitment to Everton - which he counted among the top clubs in England due to the successes in the past - to "The People's Club" (German: 'Association of the People'). This phrase was later adopted as a kind of official club name.

In the 2004/2005 season, Everton FC was traded by many experts as a relegation candidate. So it was all the more surprising that the club, under the leadership of Moyes, started flying high and was at the top of the table for the entire season. In the end, Everton finished fourth and qualified for the Champions League . Moyes personally received the award for best coach of the season ("LMA Manager of the Year") because of this performance.

However, there followed a poor start to the 2005/06 season when they were eliminated from the European competition in September 2005 and were placed at the bottom of the table after just one win and one goal in seven championship games. A sacking of Moyes seemed inevitable by the time Everton became the first English club to stop Chelsea's winning streak with a draw. Continuous improvement followed, and Moyes was named Best Manager of the Month in January 2006 after a series of undefeated games. The opportunity to participate again in a European competition, however, was gambled away by another bad phase and Moyes finished the season with his club in eleventh place in the table.

On October 14, 2008, he signed a new five-year contract.

Manchester United

In May 2013, Moyes signed a six-year contract from July 1, 2013 as coach and successor to Alex Ferguson at Manchester United . In April 2014, the club split from Moyes after the team failed to qualify for the Champions League for the first time since 1995. For the rest of the season, Ryan Giggs took over the vacant position as player- coach.

Real Sociedad

On November 10, 2014, Moyes took over the Spanish first division club Real Sociedad . He signed a contract with the Basque club until June 30, 2016. On November 9, 2015, he was dismissed.

Sunderland AFC

In the 2016/17 season , Moyes took over the coaching position at Sunderland AFC and was relegated with the team at the end of the season.

West Ham United

At the beginning of November 2017 , Moyes succeeded the dismissed Slaven Bilić on the coaching chair of the relegation-threatened club West Ham United . He successfully managed to stay up with the club, but his contract was not extended at the end of the season and Moyes left the club in May 2018. After his successor Manuel Pellegrini was sacked at West Ham at the end of December 2019, Moyes returned to the coaching post there at New Year 2020 back.
