Gary David Peters (born August 3, 1954 in Carshalton , London ) is a former English football player and current coach . Most recently, he was Technical Director at Hereford United .

Player career

From the youth division of Aldershot, Gary Peters went to Reading FC in 1975 . There he stayed until 1979 and played over 150 games in the third and fourth leagues. Then he moved to the second division club Fulham . In his first season, however, he rose again with the team in the third division. In his last season for Fulham, Peters managed to get promoted again with his team. For the 1982/83 season, the defender went to FC Wimbledon , with whom he rose from the fourth to the second division in the following two years. Again he moved after a promotion and went back to his youth club Aldershot. After a season, Peters went back to Reading. By 1988 he completed another 100 league games for the Royal and rose once to the second division and then relegated to the third division. He also coached a Reading youth team. The defender spent the last two years of his playing career again at FC Fulham, which shortly before had almost gone bankrupt.

Coaching career

After the end of his active career, Gary Peters started as an assistant coach at Fulham, Cambridge United and Preston North End . When the coach John Beck was fired in 1994, Peteres got the post as head coach. With Preston he rose to the third division in 1996 and his team showed attractive football. He was able to sign well-known players such as the then 20-year-old David Beckham on loan or Jon Macken , who was later sold for a record fee of 5 million pounds. In early 1998, Preston North End stagnated and Peters was replaced as coach by David Moyes . A month later, however, he returned to the club and was henceforth active in the development of the youth sector. After some time, however, only a few talents followed and Peters was finally dismissed in the course of cost-cutting measures. Only a short time later, he was the coach of the fourth division Exeter City . Even if his team lost only 3 of their last 13 games, Exeter was relegated at the end of the season. Exeter was in dire financial straits and had no means to sign new players. Peters therefore went to Everton FC as a scout . In November 2004 he then took over the coaching position at the fourth division club Shrewsbury Town . On March 8, 2008, he was released there after the team had brought only 6 points from 12 games in the current season.
