David Robert Joseph Beckham , OBE (born May 2, 1975 in Leytonstone , London ) is a former English football player , today's football functionary and husband of the designer and musician Victoria Beckham . He was named to the list of the world's 125 best living footballers by Pelé in 2004 . In addition to his sporting successes, Beckham is also active in various business areas outside of the field of play. According to a survey by the American news magazine Time , he was one of the 100 most influential people in the world in 2004. He is also considered to be one of the world's most successful advertising figures.
Beckham was runner-up in 1999 and 2001, respectively, in the FIFA World Player of the Year poll . He is the only Englishman who has scored a goal in three different World Cup tournaments and is only the fifth player ever to score at least two direct free-kick goals. Between November 15, 2000 and July 2, 2006, he led the English national team as team captain .
His professional career began with Manchester United , where he made his debut in 1992 at the age of 17. During his time in Manchester, Beckham became a key player in the team that dominated the Premier League in the 1990s and early 2000s . In 1999 he was involved in winning the triple English championship, FA Cup and UEFA Champions League . As the third Englishman - after Laurie Cunningham and Steve McManaman - he then joined the Spanish club Real Madrid before the start of the 2003/04 season .
After Beckham had resigned as team captain as a result of being eliminated in the quarter-finals at the 2006 World Cup in Germany , the new national coach Steve McClaren waived his nomination from August 11, 2006. After nine internationals without Beckham, Beckham was not called back into the squad for the games against Brazil and Estonia until May 26, 2007 .
At the end of the 2012/13 season, he ended his career at the age of 38.
Beckham is a member of a group of investors that the MLS - Franchise Inter Miami established that the start of the season 2020 has started the operation of gambling.
Career as a player
Childhood and first steps in football
Born in East London in Leytonstone , the son of kitchen installer David Edward Alan "Ted" Beckham and hairdresser Sandra Georgina West began playing soccer at Ridgeway Park in Chingford at an early age. His parents were very attached to the Manchester United club and traveled regularly from London to Old Trafford to attend the club's home games there. David inherited this passion from his parents and developed an ever greater passion for his own active football sport. He eventually attended one of Bobby Charlton's football schools in Manchester and won a training session at FC Barcelona as part of a talent competition . He also played for a youth team called "Ridgeway Rovers", which was coached by his father, Stuart Underwood and Steve Kirbey.
In 1986 Beckham was allowed to sit on the bench of Manchester United for the first time during the game against West Ham United . Although he only served as a kind of mascot there , this measure tied the young Beckham even more to the club. This ultimately led to the fact that he completed trial training sessions at his home club Leyton Orient and also went to Tottenham Hotspur football school. After attending the Bradenton Preparatory Academy, Beckham signed his first youth contract with Manchester United on July 8, 1991.
In the youth division of Manchester United, he was one of an extraordinarily large group of talented players who won the FA Youth Cup in May 1992 - Beckham contributed a goal against Crystal Palace in the final second leg . In the professional team of Manchester United he first came on as a substitute in the league cup against Brighton & Hove Albion . He signed his first professional contract a short time later and again reached the final in the FA Youth Cup in 1993. There he lost with his team against Leeds United , but only a year later he won the championship in the "Central League" with the second team.
In the 1994/95 season Beckham was loaned to Preston North End for three months to gain experience in the professional business. On April 2, 1995, he then made his debut for the Manchester United first team against Leeds United in the Premier League.
Manchester United
Breakthrough in the professional team
Alex Ferguson - Manchester United coach - developed a great deal of trust in the new young generation of Manchester United at this time. When three regular players left the club at the end of the 1994/95 season, he decided against taking the positions with new purchases and instead - despite increased criticism from many experts - built on the young talent from his own company. The public controversy over the decision reached its peak when United lost 3-1 at Aston Villa at the start of the season , with Beckham scoring the consolation goal from around 30 meters. Those negative remarks gradually died down as United won the next five games in a row and the young players performed well. Beckham worked out a regular position and won his first English championship at the end of the season, which he expanded to a double after winning the FA Cup . In the cup, he was able to score the decisive goal in the semifinals against Chelsea and prepared the goal of Éric Cantona with a corner pass in the final . Despite these great achievements, the English national coach Terry Venables waived Beckham's nomination for the 1996 European Championship in his own country.
In August 1996 Beckham made another step up his career ladder with a spectacular goal against Wimbledon FC . United were already 2-0 when Beckham saw opposing goalkeeper Neil Sullivan standing well in front of his goal and surprised him with a long-range goal from the center line - this hit was voted "Premier League Goal of the Decade" in 2003. The press reports about Beckham increased and on September 1, 1996, the 21-year-old came in the World Cup qualifying against Moldova for his first international match. As a regular player, he also defended the English championship with Manchester United in 1997 and was also voted the best young English professional of the past season by his professional colleagues .
Due to numerous injuries, United could not repeat the success in the 1997/98 season despite a good start and only finished second behind Arsenal .
Football World Cup 1998
Although Beckham played in all qualifying matches for the 1998 World Cup and was also in the squad for the finals in France nominated, but the England coach Glenn Hoddle accused him publicly that he was not sufficiently focused on the upcoming tournament. As a result, Beckham did not appear in any of the first two group games from the start. He was only included in the starting line-up in the third game against Colombia and scored with a free kick from a long distance in the 2-0 win - this was also his first goal for England.
In the subsequent round of 16 against Argentina , he received the red card after an assault . Beckham was initially fouled by Diego Simeone and reciprocated the opponent with a kick in the calf. Simeone later admitted that Beckham's unsportsmanlike behavior was used as an opportunity to simulate an injury as a result of the kick and then, together with his teammates, to claim Beckham's suspension. The game ended in a draw after regular time and the English team lost on penalties , whereupon many supporters and journalists blamed the “sinner” for England's departure. In addition to constructive criticism, Beckham was exposed to a public hunt for large parts of the tabloid media and also received death threats. The low point was an imprint of Beckham's likeness in the bullseye of a dartboard , which was published by the newspaper " Daily Mirror ".
The "triple season" 1998/99
Beckham was instrumental in winning the triple in the 1998/99 season when Manchester United won the English championship, the FA Cup and then the Champions League - unique to this day in English football. The season had begun with speculation as to whether Beckham would leave England as a result of the harsh criticism of himself. However, these plans were quickly removed and Beckham decided to stay in Manchester.
Although he was mocked by the opposing supporters with almost every touch of the ball, Beckham showed consistently good performances and especially his crosses provided a number of goals from strikers Dwight Yorke and Andy Cole . Beckham was able to rehabilitate himself quickly with his own supporters and opposing screams were often ironically answered with a cheer for Argentina.
To win the championship, United needed a win against Tottenham Hotspur on the final day of the game . The Londoners took the lead early, but after Beckham equalized, Manchester could finally win the game and secure the English title.
Beckham played as a central midfielder both in the FA Cup final win against Newcastle United and - due to bans for teammates in this position - in the Champions League final against FC Bayern Munich . At the end of regular time, United were down 1-0 against Munich, but two goals from Beckham corners made for the late success in stoppage time. As a result of these performances throughout the season, Beckham finished second behind Rivaldo in both the 1999 European Footballer of the Year and FIFA World Footballer of the Year elections .
The 1999/2000 season
Despite the great successes in the 1998/99 season, Beckham remained very unpopular with opposing supporters and with large parts of journalists, which was particularly evident after his deliberate foul - and the associated red card - against Necaxa at the 2000 Club World Cup . In the press, the constant allegation circulated that his wife Victoria Beckham had a negative influence on him and that a sale of Beckham should be in the interests of Manchester United. Ferguson publicly confessed to Beckham during this time and this should ultimately remain with the club.
Despite official advocacy, the relationship between Ferguson and Beckham began to deteriorate, presumably due to Beckham's increased fame and increased commitments outside of football. When Beckham was allowed to travel to London in 2000 because of his son Brooklyn's gastrointestinal flu , Ferguson was enraged when he saw Victoria Beckham in a photo from London Fashion Week that same evening. Since he suspected that Beckham could have trained if Victoria had stayed at home, he imposed the maximum fine of 50,000 pounds - the equivalent of two weeks' wages at the time.
Ferguson also removed Beckham from the squad for the important game against Leeds United and justified this in his autobiography with the fact that Beckham "had not behaved fairly towards his teammates". Still, the overall season was a successful one for Beckham, with Manchester United winning the title by a record 18 points behind the runner-up.
New relationship with English football fans
The public abuse of the English fans bottomed out in England's 3-2 loss to Portugal at Euro 2000 , when Beckham was insulted by a group of English supporters throughout the match. Beckham reacted by showing this group the “ finger ”, which initially earned him some criticism, but large parts of the media landscape - including many representatives who had previously provoked such behavior - increasingly kept their distance and asked their readers for the Put an end to insults.
After the resignation of Kevin Keegan on November 15, 2000 as England national coach, the interim coach Peter Taylor appointed Beckham as the new team captain, who should keep this role under the subsequent coach Sven-Göran Eriksson . Under Beckham's leadership, England qualified for the 2002 World Cup and impressed above all with a surprisingly high 5-1 win over Germany in Munich . The last step from bogeyman to English folk hero finally followed on October 6, 2001, when England faced the team from Greece . England needed a win or a draw to qualify directly for the World Cup finals, but were 2-1 behind shortly before the end. The entire English team fell short of their possibilities, and when Teddy Sheringham was fouled around seven meters outside the Greek penalty area, Beckham then equalized with a typical high- speed kick, which cleared England's way to Japan and South Korea . A short time later, the BBC named him British Sportsman of the Year . Beckham finished second again in the world's best player election - now behind Portuguese Luís Figo .
The metatarsal fracture
On April 10, 2002 Beckham injured himself during a Champions League game against Deportivo La Coruña and broke his second left metatarsal. In the British media, it was speculated that the injury was the result of a deliberate foul, as this was committed by the Argentine Aldo Duscher and England was supposed to meet Argentina at the World Cup tournament in the same year. Beckham was no longer operational for United for the rest of the season. Nevertheless, he signed a new three-year contract in May after months of negotiations - mainly because of the controversial additional payments for Beckham's personal rights - had not led to a result. Together with his individual sponsorship income, Beckham became the highest paid football player in the world at the time with this contract.
Soccer World Cup 2002
Although not fully recovered at the World Cup finals, Beckham played in the first group game against Sweden and also scored the decisive winner with a penalty in the game against Argentina, which meant that the South American tournament favorite should be eliminated from the tournament after another game without a win. In the quarter-finals, England finally lost to the eventual world champions from Brazil . A month later, Beckham and Kirsty Howard (a girl with a rare form of deformed organs very well known in Great Britain) presented the Queen with the Jubilee Baton stick - similar to the torch used at the Olympic Games - at the 2002 Commonwealth Games in Manchester .
The last United season
An injury early in the 2002/03 season ensured that Beckham lost his regular seat at United and was replaced by Ole Gunnar Solskjær on right midfield. His bad relationship with Ferguson suffered another setback on February 15, 2003, when Ferguson shot away a football boot lying on the floor in the dressing room after a lost game against Arsenal , which hit Beckham over his eye and left a significant wound that subsequently left had to be sewn. More media speculation followed that Beckham was about to end at Manchester United, and bookmakers offered bets on whether Ferguson or Beckham would leave the club first. Despite the bad start to the season, the team performance stabilized increasingly from December, which resulted in the renewed win of the English championship title. In the English national team Beckham remained a regular player and on June 13, 2003 he was awarded " OBE " for his services to English football .
Beckham scored 61 goals in 266 games during his 11-year tenure at Manchester United. He won a total of six English championships, two FA Cup editions, a Champions League title, a World Cup and an edition of the FA Youth Cup.
real Madrid

After Manchester United initially flirted with Beckham's transfer to FC Barcelona , the latter refused to move there and instead signed a four-year contract with Real Madrid , which should be worth around 35 million euros. On July 1, 2003, the transfer was officially sealed and Beckham became the third Englishman after Laurie Cunningham and Steve McManaman to be under contract with Real Madrid. Immediately after his engagement, rumors circulated that the main motivation for Real Madrid was to exploit Beckham's marketing potential and were less sporty. This presumption was given additional support when, immediately after the signing, the Real Madrid jerseys bearing Beckham's name were sold out within a day and brought the new club an income of around 624,000 euros. He could not take over the number 7, which he had always worn at Manchester United and in the national team, because it was already taken to Raúl . Because of his great affinity to the top basketball player Michael Jordan , he - like Jordan - alternatively chose number 23.
The first season: 2003/04
Beckham blended in well with the new team, scoring five goals in his first 16 games. Nevertheless, the team had to struggle with the great pressure of expectation and clearly missed the target set by the presidium - the Spanish championship title or a triumph in the Champions League. In addition, Beckham had problems in the British tabloid press in April 2004, in which his former business partner Rebecca Loos claimed to have had an affair with him. Just a week later, Malaysian- born Australian model Sarah Marbeck also claimed to have been connected with Beckham. Beckham described both allegations as "silly". In sporting terms, the 2003/04 season ended for Beckham with a disappointing fourth place in the Spanish championship and the quarter-finals in the Champions League.
The 2004 European Championship
During the 2004 European Championship in Portugal , he was used in all games. However, the tournament was disappointing for him. In the 1: 2 defeat to France kept Fabien Barthez a penalty of Beckham. He also failed to score on penalties against the hosts and England were eliminated in the quarter-finals.
The second season: 2004/05
During the preparation for the season, a break-in at the Beckhams' domicile made the headlines, but the intruder was caught by the security guards and was unable to get to Victoria Beckham and the children who were present. From a sporting point of view, Beckham drew negative attention when he admitted to having committed a deliberate foul on Ben Thatcher in order to provoke a yellow card during the game against Wales and a suspension for the next game - Beckham had previously injured himself and expected to not be able to be used for this subsequent game. The English FA asked for an official statement and Beckham apologized by citing "having made a mistake".
In January 2005, the UNICEF organization named him official ambassador and Beckham was also involved in London's ultimately successful application for the 2012 Olympic Games.
The third season: 2005/06
Even in his third season Beckham could not achieve his sporting goals at Real Madrid. In addition to a runner-up and twelve points behind the title holder FC Barcelona, the Champions League was again in the round of 16 when they lost to Arsenal . As a partial success, he was only able to personally book the most assists by a player in the past season.
In October 2005, Beckham was the first English team captain to be sent off in the game against Austria , but only one month later he made his 50th appearance in this role in the friendly against Argentina. In club football, too, he received a suspension in the championship against Valencia shortly afterwards , when he ironically applauded the referee after receiving a yellow card and promptly received the yellow-red card - only two days later, however, the suspension was suspended. A third time he had to leave the pitch early on December 3, 2005 during a game against Getafe FC .
He opened football academies in Los Angeles and east London during the season . In 2006 he was also a member of the jury for the “British Book Awards”.
The fourth season: 2006/07
In the 2006/07 season, the new coach Fabio Capello initially sorted him out of the regular formation, so that Beckham was only used in a few games - and then mainly as a substitute. Instead, Capello relied on José Antonio Reyes on the right wing position and Real lost seven of a total of nine games in which Beckham had played in the starting eleven.
Following lengthy contract renewal negotiations, Real's sporting director Predrag Mijatović announced that Beckham would not stay with the club beyond the end of the season. Mijatović later qualified this statement by pointing out that his statement had been incorrectly translated and that Beckham's contract had simply not yet been renewed.
On January 11, 2007, however, Beckham himself announced that he had signed a five-year contract with the LA Galaxy - starting July 1 and endowed with over 250 million US dollars. Capello reacted immediately by saying that Beckham would no longer be used for Real and should only participate in the club's training operations. From this plan, however, Real's coach resigned in the following month and used him in the game against Real Sociedad San Sebastián on February 10, 2007, with Beckham even contributing one goal to the victory. Although he received the red card in the last minute in the next game at home against Betis Sevilla for being kicked, he played his way back into the hearts of fans in the following Champions League game when he made two assists in a 3-2 first-leg win against FC Bayern Munich gave. In view of his move to Los Angeles, this encounter also represented Beckham's last game in the most prestigious European club competition for the time being, as Real was eliminated from the Champions League after losing the second leg in Munich due to the away goals rule . With a total of 103 Champions League games, Beckham was the player with the third-most games in this tournament, which had been played since 1992.
Beckham's clearly rising form curve at Real Madrid prompted Steve McClaren to offer Beckham the prospect of calling Beckham for the qualifying matches against Israel and Andorra . A ligament injury in his right knee, which he sustained in the encounter against Getafe CF, prevented his possible use. Beckham returned only on 21 April, 2007 the team of Real back and prepared as a substitute the decisive 2: 1 by Sergio Ramos against FC Valencia in front. Beckham played his last game for Real Madrid on June 17, 2007, when he secured his first and only Spanish championship in the title race with FC Barcelona with a 3-1 win over RCD Mallorca on the final day of the game.
The 2006 World Cup
In the run-up to the 2006 World Cup , the English team was viewed by many experts as a possible tournament favorite. However, the team acted very sluggishly and Beckham's performance was criticized in most of the media and in public. Nevertheless, he had significantly influenced the decisive 1-0 in the first game with an own goal by Carlos Gamarra against Paraguay with a free kick and also prepared the opening goal against Trinidad and Tobago with his cross on Peter Crouch . Another submission to 2-0 by Steven Gerrard against the last-mentioned opponent brought him the choice of the best player in this game. A poor performance against Sweden was followed by a clash with Ecuador in the second round , which Beckham decided with a direct converted free kick in the 59th minute, and England thus advanced to the quarter-finals. Beckham fell ill at the game against Ecuador and vomited several times due to dehydration and malaise.
In the quarter-finals against Portugal Beckham was replaced shortly after half-time due to an injury; England lost the game 3-1 on penalties after a goalless 120 minutes. One day later, on July 2, 2006, he resigned as team captain and justified this by the fact that he saw this step - the passing on of the captaincy - symbolic of the path to the new era under Steve McClaren . The new team captain was John Terry, the captain of Chelsea FC .
On August 11, 2006, the new England coach Steve McClaren announced his line-up for the friendly against Greece and left Beckham completely disregarded. McClaren justified this with the fact that he intended to go with the team in a "different direction" and Beckham was not taken into account. Nevertheless, McClaren offered him a new nomination in the future. With Shaun Wright-Phillips , Kieran Richardson and Aaron Lennon - who had already served as the second choice behind Beckham in the World Cup - there were now three young players in England's squad who should compete for the position on the right side of midfield. In the end, the role fell to Steven Gerrard for the time being.
Beckham's first comeback rumors came up in September 2006 when both Aaron Lennon was injured and Owen Hargreaves was out with a broken leg. Despite considerable public pressure from renowned sports personalities - including Bobby Robson , Glenn Hoddle , Mark Lawrenson and Alan Hansen - McClaren did not nominate the former captain and in December 2006 stated that Steven Gerrard had completely taken over Beckham's role: “We everyone knows David Beckham and his accomplishments on the right. But Stevie's build-up and flanks are just as good as anyone else in the world. "
The return to the national team
On May 26, 2007, McClaren announced that he had nominated Beckham back into the English squad for the first time after his resignation from the captaincy and the elimination from the World Cup tournament in 2006. He started the first game in the newly built Wembley Stadium against Brazil on June 1, 2007, returned with a good performance and prepared John Terry's opening goal with a free kick - the game ended 1-1. According to his own statement, Beckham intends to be available for the English national team even after his move to the US Major League Soccer . According to Alexi Lalas as general manager of LA Galaxy, nothing should stand in the way of the new club, although the release should be limited to "appropriate" competitive games. This restriction was opposed in advance by the world football association FIFA and pointed out to LA Galaxy that, in accordance with FIFA rules, the club had to release Beckham for any English international match should he have been nominated for it. On March 30, 2009 Beckham played his 109th international match at the new Wembley Stadium against Slovakia. This surpasses the previous record of Bobby Moore , who appeared 108 times for the English national team as a field player. The only player with more stakes for the English national football team is the former goalkeeper Peter Shilton (125).
LA Galaxy
The 2007 season
On July 21, 2007 Beckham made his debut despite injury in a friendly against Chelsea for the LA Galaxy . He premiered in Major League Soccer on August 9, 2007 against DC United .
Since his move, however, Beckham sat most of the time on the bench due to ankle problems and a severe inner ligament injury on August 29, 2007. On October 18, 2007 he made his comeback against the New York Red Bulls after ten injury-related breaks . In order to keep fit during the break in Major League Soccer, Beckham trained at Arsenal in January 2008.
Loan to AC Milan

In the winter break of 2008/09 he was loaned to AC Milan until the start of the Major League Soccer season (mid-March). Beckham was able to convince in his first games in Serie A , scoring two goals in the first three league games. Against FC Bologna he scored a goal from the game, against CFC Genoa he scored a remarkable free-kick.
From January 2010 he was loaned to AC Milan again.
On March 14, 2010 Beckham was seriously injured in a league game against Chievo Verona . Without the influence of an opponent, he tore his left Achilles tendon and missed the finals of the World Cup in South Africa. Beckham was taken as a scout to the World Cup due to the injury.
In the course of that incident, Beckham was no longer loaned out the following year, as the financially lucrative loan deal with the additional request that he should keep himself fit had ultimately proven counterproductive due to the resulting several months of injury.
Fifth season and title win
In his fifth season for Galaxy Beckham won the MLS final on November 20, 2011 against Houston Dynamo 1-0, and thus the championship. Beckham initially did not extend his contract, which was due to expire on December 31, 2011. Beckham turned down a move back to Europe to Paris Saint-Germain after contract negotiations in January 2012.
Contract extension and sixth season
Beckham extended his expired contract in January 2012 by two years to December 31, 2013. Nevertheless, he left the club at the end of 2012.
Paris Saint-Germain
On January 31, 2013 Beckham signed a contract with the French first division club Paris Saint-Germain until June 30, 2013. At the height of this season he was once again in the Champions League quarter-finals, but lost with his team against FC Barcelona out. On May 12, 2013 PSG won with Beckham against league rivals Lyon 1-0 and thus secured the win of the French championship early.
