Carlos Alberto Gamarra Pavon (born February 17, 1971 in Capiatá ) is a former Paraguayan football player .

He was Paraguay's record national player from 2003 to 2013 and was named Footballer of the Year in his home country in 1997 and 1998. With the Paraguayan national team , he took part in three soccer world championships . At the soccer tournament of the 2004 Olympic Games , he led the Paraguayan selection as captain to the silver medal.

Club career

The defender played for Cerro Porteño until 1995 , only in 1992 he laced his football boots for the Argentinian club Independiente . In 1995 he moved to the Brazilian club Internacional Porto Alegre and played there for two years. In 1997 he moved to the Portuguese club Benfica Lisbon , but only a year later he returned to Brazil to Corinthians São Paulo . In 1999 he tried his luck again in Europe and moved to Atlético Madrid .

From 2000 to 2001 he returned to Brazil again and joined Flamengo Rio de Janeiro . Gamarra started his third attempt in Europe in 2001 when he switched to AEK Athens . A year later he finally moved to the Italian club Inter Milan , before moving back to Brazil to Palmeiras São Paulo in 2005 . In the 2005/06 season he was voted the best defensive player in the Brazilian league in the jersey of Palmeiras São Paulo. In January 2007 he moved to his home country at Club Olimpia where he played for a year and then announced the end of his career.

National team

On March 3, 1993, Carlos Gamarra played his first game for Paraguay (Paraguay 1-0 Bolivia) and has since been one of the team's most important performers. He was at the 1998 , 2002 and 2006 World Cups in all eleven games of his country over the full length on the field. The tournaments in 1998 and 2000, in which Paraguay moved into the round of 16, he completed without committing a single foul. At the 1998 World Cup, he was also elected to the tournament's all-star team by FIFA . In 2006 he led his team onto the field as captain and in the first game against England after just three minutes with an own goal for the final score of 0: 1. With the elimination of Paraguay in the preliminary round at the 2006 World Cup, he also ended his international career.

At the 2004 Olympic Games he also led the Paraguayan selection as captain and won the silver medal with his team behind Argentina (gold) and ahead of Italy (bronze). He was one of three players in the Paraguayan Olympic selection who were allowed to exceed the age limit of 23 years.

Gamarra also took part in the Copa America five times from 1993 to 2004 and reached the quarter-finals with his team.

He played a total of 110 international matches and scored 12 international goals. From his 85th international match in 2003, he was the record international player in his country until 2013, when he was replaced by Paulo da Silva , the current record holder. He was one of the first South American players to play more than 100 international matches.
