Career

societies

Santa Cruz began playing football at the age of seven in the local army sports club in his native Asunción, the capital of his country, and two years later moved to the youth department of Club Olimpia . After seven years, he moved up to the professional team in 1997 and made his debut at the age of 16 in the Primera División de Paraguay , the first division of Paraguay. With the club, Santa Cruz won the championship three times and the semi-annual championships of Apertura and Clausura five times .

During the Junior World Cup in 1999 , FC Bayern Munich's attention was drawn to him, who signed the striker in May 1999 for the equivalent of five million euros. After a successful first season in 1999/2000 , in which he scored five goals in eleven games and won two titles with Bayern , Santa Cruz was injured frequently - ruptured ligament (November 3, 2001), ankle injury (July 14, 2002), fractured metacarpal ( October 30, 2002), torn inner ligament (January 10, 2003 and April 2, 2003), meniscus damage (September 5, 2004), knee injury (October 24, 2004) - and was not used permanently in any of the next seasons.

After half a year of convalescence , during which he had to deal with a stroke of fate caused by the death of his brother Oscar on January 30, 2005, Santa Cruz was able to build on earlier sporting successes. After good performance in autumn 2005, he was called back to the senior national team. On October 29, 2005 (11th matchday), however, he pulled a cruciate ligament and a partial tear of the inner ligament in his right knee in the 2-1 win in the away game against 1. FC Köln . Despite the severity of the injury, his contract with Bayern Munich was extended for another three years on November 15, 2005. He crowned his highly acclaimed return to the team on May 3, 2006 (32nd matchday) in a 3-1 win in the Bundesliga home game against VfB Stuttgart right from the start, behind the top Roy Makaay and Claudio Pizarro, with the goal to make it 1: 1 in the 11th minute.

On July 28, 2007 he moved to England for the first division club Blackburn Rovers for a transfer fee of five million euros , for which he was in the first competitive game on August 11 (1st matchday) against Middlesbrough FC , a few minutes after being substituted on, for the interim 1: 1 scored. On December 15, 2007 (17th matchday) Santa Cruz managed a hat trick against Wigan Athletic , with Blackburn losing the game 3-5. It was the first time in over ten years in England's top division that a team lost despite a hat-trick of their own. At the end of his first season in England, Santa Cruz was the fourth top scorer in the league with 19 goals in 37 games. In the 2008/09 season he was only successful four times in 20 appearances.

For the 2009/10 season , Santa Cruz moved to Manchester City for a transfer fee of around 21 million euros . For the club he made his debut on September 28, 2009 (7th matchday) in a 3-1 home win over West Ham United after being substituted in the 80th minute for Shaun Wright-Phillips . In January 2011, Santa Cruz moved back to Blackburn Rovers on loan after having only made 20 appearances at Manchester City in a year and a half.

On August 29, Betis Sevilla announced they had signed Santa Cruz for a season on loan from Manchester City. He made his debut on September 11, 2011 (2nd matchday) in a 1-0 home win against RCD Mallorca , after being substituted on for Jorge Molina in the 75th minute . On September 22, 2011 (5th matchday) he scored his first two goals in the Primera División in a 4-3 home win against Real Saragossa .

On August 31, 2012, Santa Cruz moved again on loan for a season to league rivals FC Málaga , who signed him for three more years after the season. After 73 league games in which he scored 17 goals, Santa Cruz signed a contract valid until the end of the 2016 season with the Mexican first division club CD Cruz Azul on December 29, 2014 and is eligible to play for the club from the start of the 2015 Clausura . He made his debut on January 11, 2015 (1st matchday) in a 1-0 win in the away game against CF Pachuca , his first league goal was scored on 22 March 2015 (11th matchday) in a 2-1 win at home against Club Tijuana with the goal to equalize in the 41st minute.

On August 26, 2015, it was announced that Santa Cruz would return to Málaga CF as the club had loaned him from Cruz Azul for the entire 2015/16 season . After the end of the season he returned to his former home club, the first division club Olimpia, in order to be able to participate in the preparations for the upcoming Clausura .

Roque Santa Cruz participated in the South American Championships in 1999 , 2007 , 2011 and 2015 .
