Deportivo Pesquero

Pizarro began his professional career with the Peruvian first division club Deportivo Pesquero at the age of 17. In the 1996 season he made his debut against Alianza Lima ; he scored his first two league goals two weeks later in a 2-1 win over Atlético Torino .

Alianza Lima

In 1998 he moved to league rivals and then champions Alianza Lima and scored 25 goals in the first two seasons. At the end of the 1999 season of the Peruvian Torneo Apertura , he finished second with the team behind Universitario de Deportes .

Werder Bremen

In 1999 he was signed by Bundesliga club Werder Bremen . In his premier season he scored ten goals in 25 Bundesliga games, the following season he scored 19 goals in 31 Bundesliga games.

FC Bayern Munich

Because of these successes, FC Bayern Munich became aware of Pizarro and signed him in the summer of 2001 for 15 million DM (8.2 million euros). With Bayern Munich he won the World Cup in 2001 , the Double in 2003, 2005, 2006 and the DFB League Cup in 2004 . The contract, which expired on June 30, 2007, was not extended after Pizarro had rejected an offer from FC Bayern Munich.

FC Chelsea / Werder Bremen

Pizarro in Werder Bremen's club clothes (2010)

For the 2007/08 season Pizarro moved to the English first division club Chelsea , where he signed a four-year contract. However, he could not prevail there, was mostly only substituted and scored only two league goals.

He then moved back to Werder Bremen for a year on loan for the 2008/09 season , where he was the most successful goalscorer with 17 goals and won the DFB Cup in 2009 .

He then returned to Chelsea, to which he was contractually bound for two more years. He completed the pre-season and was used in the World Football Challenge , which he won with the club. Another Premier League appearance did not follow. After several weeks of attempts by Werder Bremen to sign Pizarro again, and after coach Carlo Ancelotti had not called him into the 18-man squad at the start of the season against Hull City , Chelsea finally agreed to return. According to his own information, Pizarro turned down offers from Turkish, Greek and other English clubs. On August 18, 2009, three days after the start of the Premier League season and after two days of playing in the Bundesliga, he signed a three-year contract with Werder Bremen with an option for another year. By 2012 he had scored 43 goals in three years, replacing Giovane Élber as the best foreign shooter in the Bundesliga.

Return to FC Bayern Munich

Pizarro in 2013

For the 2012/13 season , Pizarro returned to Bayern Munich on a free transfer, where he signed a contract valid until June 30, 2013. After a few short appearances in the Bundesliga, he scored three goals in a 6-1 win in the fourth Champions League group game against OSC Lille on November 7, 2012 . On March 30, 2013, he scored four goals in a 9-2 win at home against Hamburger SV and prepared two goals. At the end of the season he won the triple with Bayern Munich . In July 2013, Pizarro's contract was extended by one year to June 30, 2014.

In 2014 Pizarro won his fifth championship and his fifth DFB Cup with Bayern; Pizarro's contract was extended for another year - until June 30, 2015. A torn muscle bundle in his thigh during training on November 3, 2014, forced him to take a break for several weeks. In the second half of the 2014/15 season he played eight Bundesliga games in which he remained without hits. He ended his last season at Bayern Munich with his sixth championship.

Return to Werder Bremen

After two months without a club, Pizarro returned to Werder Bremen on September 7, 2015. He signed a contract that ran until the end of the 2015/16 season and was given the number "14" on his back. He made his comeback on September 13, 2015, when he played a 3-1 away win at TSG 1899 Hoffenheim on matchday 4 in the 82nd minute of the game from coach Viktor Skripnik , with whom he played together during his first time in Bremen. was substituted on for Ulisses Garcia and prepared the interim 2-1 for Anthony Ujah in the 92nd minute . On February 5, 2016, he was the first foreigner to play his 400th Bundesliga game. He is the only still active player with more than 400 Bundesliga games . On March 2, 2016, in Werder's 4-1 win at Bayer Leverkusen, Pizarro was the oldest Bundesliga player to date to score three goals in a game. With his 102nd Bundesliga goal for Werder, scored on April 16, 2016 in the home game against VfL Wolfsburg , he is now the club's most successful goalscorer. He overtook long-time record holder Marco Bode , who scored 101 goals. At the end of the season, his contract term was extended by a further year until June 30, 2017, but not beyond the end of the 2016/17 season.

1. FC Cologne

On September 29, 2017, Pizarro joined 1. FC Köln , with whom he received a contract that ran until the end of the 2017/18 season . After a few minor injuries, he scored his first goal on March 4, 2018 in the game against VfB Stuttgart . 1. FC Köln lost the game 2: 3. At the end of the season he was relegated to the 2nd Bundesliga with 1. FC Köln as bottom of the table. He came to 16 missions and one goal.

Again return to Werder Bremen

For the 2018/19 season , the 39-year-old Pizarro returned to Werder Bremen to end his career at the club, which had been his first in Europe in 1999. He received the shirt with the number 4. When Pizarro came on two days after his 40th birthday on October 5, 2018 in the game against VfL Wolfsburg, he was only the ninth 40-year-old player to a Bundesliga appearance. With the 1-1 equalizer at Hertha BSC on February 16, 2019, he replaced Mirko Votava (also Werder Bremen) as the oldest Bundesliga goalscorer (40 years and 136 days). With this hit he set another record, becoming the first Bundesliga player to score in 21 consecutive years (previously Klaus Fischer (20 years old)). After more hits, his record is now 40 years and 227 days (last hit on May 18, 2019 for a 2-1 final against RB Leipzig ).

On the last match day of the 2018/19 season, Pizarro extended his contract term for another year.

In the first main round of the 2019/20 DFB Cup , Pizarro scored twice in a 6-1 win against Atlas Delmenhorst , making him the oldest double goal scorer in this competition.

In the two relegation games with 1. FC Heidenheim to stay in the league, he was no longer used.

National team

Pizarro as captain of the Peruvian national team (2007)

Pizarro was the captain of the Peruvian senior team , which missed qualifying for the 2006 World Cup in Germany . He scored one goal in eleven qualifying games in which he was used. Pizarro had previously participated with the national team in the Copa America 2004 , in which the team failed in the quarter-finals in the selection of Argentina . In one game he suffered a torn skull and was out for several months.

In October 2006 he got into trouble with national coach Franco Navarro when he only played one of two international matches against arch-rivals Chile in order to be able to return to Bayern Munich in time. In the event of punishment from FIFA or the FPF , he threatened to resign from the national team. In a letter Pizarro finally asked the Peruvian Football Association not to be nominated for international matches as long as Navarro is the national coach. In July 2008, the association's internal ban on players involved in the boycott was lifted. Nevertheless, Pizarro was initially no longer considered. On March 29, 2011 he was used again in the international test match against the selection of Ecuador in The Hague . On June 17, 2011, he suffered an inner ligament rupture in a training match for the national team, so he was out for the 2011 Copa América . In 2015 he took part again in the Copa America , played in the group matches against Venezuela's selection , against which he scored the 1-0 winner, and against Colombia , where he was surprised to receive the captain's armband from Carlos Lobaton . He also played in the quarter-finals against the selection of Bolivia and in the semi-finals, which were lost 1: 2 against the eventual tournament winners Chile. In 2016, coach Ricardo Gareca decided not to use Pizarro for the 100th anniversary edition of the Copa America . For the 2018 World Cup , he was not nominated for the Peruvian squad. The Peruvian is currently playing 85 full internationals with 20 goals.
