International Champions Cup

The International Champions Cup (ICC) is a series of international friendlies in club football that has been held annually in summer since 2013 and is played in tournament form. Most of the games take place in different stadiums in the USA , but individual games have been and will also be played in Canada , China , Singapore , Australia and various European stadiums. The mode of the tournament has already been changed several times.

The tournament was launched by the promotion company Relevant Sports, which was founded in 2012 . The company is owned by billionaire Miami Dolphins owner Stephen M. Ross and former New York Jets CEO Matt Higgins. The International Champions Cup is the successor to the World Football Challenge, which took place from 2009 to 2012 .

World Football Challenge (2009–2012)

The previous World Football Challenge competition took place three times between 2009 and 2012 . The tournament was played in a league system that z. This was partly adjusted so that each team had to play a maximum of three to four games. There were also points for wins on penalties or for every goal scored.

In 2009 there were only four participants, with Chelsea FC winning ahead of Club América from Mexico and the two Milanese clubs AC and Inter . In 2011, 13 clubs from seven different countries took part. The winner was Real Madrid ahead of their two city rivals United and City from Manchester. Juventus Turin and FC Barcelona were also there from Europe . Eleven teams took part in the 2012 edition, there was no official winner due to the mode.

The first edition of the International Champions Cup was held from July 27th to August 7th, 2013. The games were held in six stages in the US, a game was in the Estadio Mestalla in Spain Valencia played. The teams were divided into two groups of four teams each and played two group games each. After the first round, the winners and losers of these games met each other. The winner of this second game then moved into the final, the remaining teams played the places. However, this complicated knockout mode was simplified in 2014.

Real Madrid , Los Angeles Galaxy , Everton FC and Juventus Turin met in the Eastern Group . The first-round games, which took place in San Francisco and Phoenix , were won by Everton 3-1 against LA Galaxy after a 1-1 draw on penalties against Juventus and Real Madrid. The two games of the second round were played in direct succession at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles . After Juventus lost 3-1 to the hosts, Real Madrid made it into the final with a 2-1 win over Everton.

In the Western Group , Chelsea FC , the two city rivals AC Milan and Inter Milan and FC Valencia faced each other. Chelsea won both of their games against Inter and Milan 2-0 and also reached the final. After losing 2-1 in their first game, Valencia clearly won their second game 4-0 against Inter Milan.

The finals were all played on two consecutive days at Sun Life Stadium in Miami . Inter Milan relegated Juventus Turin to last place in the game for seventh place on penalties (9: 8 penalties, 1: 1). In the other placement games, Valencia won 1-0 against Everton and AC Milan 2-0 against LA. Real Madrid won the final 3-1 with goals from Marcelo (14th) and Cristiano Ronaldo (31st, 57th) against Chelsea, who only came to an interim equalization through Ramires (17th).

The top scorer was Cristiano Ronaldo (Real Madrid) with three goals. He was followed with two goals by Karim Benzema (Real Madrid) and Jonathan Viera (Valencia CF).

The 2014 tournament took place from July 24 to August 4, 2014 in a total of twelve US stadiums, one game was played in Toronto , Canada . Eight teams took part, which were divided into two groups of four teams. Within a group, each team played against the other three. If there was a tie after 90 minutes, the winner was determined by an immediate penalty shoot-out. Three points were awarded for a regular win, two points for a win on penalties, one point for a loss on penalties, and zero points for a loss in regular time. Following the group stage, the fourth placed of the two groups then played for seventh place, the third placed for fifth. The game for third place was played by the runners-up in the groups and the two group winners met in the final to determine the tournament winner.

Group A included Manchester United , Inter Milan , AS Roma and defending champions Real Madrid . With three wins - including one on penalties - Manchester achieved first place with eight points and thus the final. The preliminary round match between Manchester United and Real Madrid on August 2, 2014 was watched by 109,318 spectators at Michigan Stadium in Ann Arbor , more spectators than ever before at a football game in the USA. In the second group, the English clubs Manchester City and Liverpool FC as well as AC Milan and Olympiacos Piraeus met . Group winners and thus also finalists was Liverpool with eight points.

The final took place on August 4, 2014, as in the previous year, at the Sun Life Stadium in Miami . After Liverpool took a 0-1 lead with a penalty from Steven Gerrard (14th), Manchester United turned the game around with goals from Wayne Rooney (55th), Juan Mata (57th) and Jesse Lingard (88th) and won 3-1 in the end. The top scorer was Stevan Jovetić (Manchester City) with five goals ahead of Dimitris Diamantakos (Olympiakos). Wayne Rooney (Man United), Ashley Young (Man United), Raheem Sterling (Liverpool FC), Gareth Bale (Real Madrid) and Francesco Totti (AS Roma) shared third place with two goals each .

Between July 11th and August 5th, 2015 ten teams took part in the regular edition of the International Champions Cup . Most of the games (13 of 17) was in various stages of United States held, individual games were also in the Canadian Toronto , in Mexico City , as well as in European cities Florence and London played out. The participating clubs from Europe were Chelsea FC , Manchester United (both England), Paris SG (France), AC Florence (Italy), Benfica Lisbon (Portugal) and FC Barcelona (Spain). In Melbourne Cricket Ground were Real Madrid , the AS Roma and Manchester City respectively against each other in the Chinese cities of Shenzhen , Guangzhou and Shanghai hit Real Madrid on the two Italian city rivals AC Milan and Inter Milan . In 2016, the International Champions Cup took place from July 23 to August 13 in various stadiums in eight states in the USA and several countries in Europe ( Great Britain , Ireland , Sweden ). Participating clubs this year were the first German representative of Bayern Munich , from England FC Liverpool , which Chelsea and Leicester City , the FC Barcelona and Real Madrid of Spain, AC Milan and Inter Milan from Italy, Glasgow Celtic from Scotland and the French association Paris Saint-Germain . Each club played three games. As in the previous year, PSG won the tournament.

Also this year two mini-tournaments took place in China and Australia . From July 22nd to 28th, city ​​rivals United and City from Manchester met the second German club Borussia Dortmund in Shanghai , Beijing and Shenzhen . Since the Manchester derby was canceled at short notice, no winner was chosen. Three more matches were played in Melbourne between July 23rd and 29th, featuring Juventus Turin (Italy), Tottenham Hotspur (England), Atlético Madrid (Spain) and Melbourne Victory (Australia). Juventus was declared the overall winner.

2017

In 2017, the International Champions Cup took place from July 18 to 30 in various stadiums in the USA as well as in China and Singapore . Participating clubs this year were from Germany Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund , from England FC Liverpool , which Chelsea , Manchester United , Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur , the FC Barcelona and Real Madrid in Spain, Juventus , AS Roma , AC Milan and Inter Milan from Italy and the French clubs Paris Saint-Germain and Olympique Lyon .

The North American tournament played 12 games, each team competed three times. FC Barcelona won the tournament with three wins against Juventus, Manchester United and Real Madrid. In Singapore, Inter Milan, FC Bayern and Chelsea played against each other, with the Italians declaring themselves the winners with two wins. Since six clubs in China met in only four games, each team had a different number of games, which is why no official winner was named.

2018

The 2018 edition took place from July 20 to August 11, 2018. 18 top European teams from six nations took part. After another mode change, each team now played three games, which led to an overall final table; unlike in previous years, there were no more separate mini-tournaments. The total of 27 games took place in 23 different stadiums, 15 of which were in the USA, seven in Europe and one in Singapore.

There were three points for a win in regular time and zero for a defeat. A draw was followed by a penalty shoot-out, the winning team received two points and the losing team one point. The ranking was as follows: 1) total points, 2) points in direct clashes (if any), 3) goal difference, 4) goals scored, 5) result against an identical opponent (if any), 6) number of reds Cards, 7) number of yellow cards, 8) number of fouls committed, 9) coin toss.

No team was able to win all three games, Tottenham Hotspur was the overall winner with two wins against Rome and Milan and one defeat on penalties against Barcelona due to the better goal difference in front of Borussia Dortmund and Inter Milan , both of which were also twice victorious.

In 2018 there was also a women's edition of the ICC for the first time. Four teams met in the first edition, these were Manchester City (England), Olympique Lyon and Paris Saint-Germain (both France) and North Carolina Courage (USA). The two semi-finals (July 26), as well as the final and the third place match (July 29), all took place at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens . In the final, North Carolina Courage beat Olympique Lyon 1-0, with Heather O'Reilly scoring the decisive goal .

2019

The 2019 edition took place from July 21st to August 10th, 2019. In contrast to the previous year, when there were 18 teams, 11 top European teams from five nations as well as the Mexican first division club Deportivo Guadalajara took part. The mode of delivery, according to which each team played three games, the results of which were included in an overall final table, was not changed. The total of 18 games took place in 16 different stadiums, eleven of which were in the USA, three in Europe and two in Asia.

2020

The 2020 edition was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic .
