The Michigan Stadium is a college football - stadium in the US city of Ann Arbor in the state of Michigan . It is located on the campus of the University of Michigan and is the home ground of several sports teams of the University named Michigan Wolverines , in the NCAA ( Big Ten Conference is organized). Primarily it has been used by the college football team since 1927. With an official capacity of 107,601, Michigan Stadium is currently the largest stadium in the United States and the third largest in the world . The stadium's capacity is just below the population of the city in which it is located; 114,000 people live in Ann Arbor.

history

When it opened in 1927, the stadium held 72,000 spectators. It wasn't until 1949 that it was expanded to its current capacity. Although every game has been attended by over 100,000 spectators since 1975, the atmosphere in the stadium is considered relatively quiet compared to other college football stadiums.

The first game took place on October 1, 1927 against the Wesleyan Battling Bishops , but the official opening was not until October 22, 1927 with a game against the Ohio State Buckeyes . From 1927 to 1968 there was a natural turf surface, which was replaced by artificial turf in 1969. In 1991 natural grass was laid again, but this turned out to be problematic due to the very high moisture in the soil. Since 2003 people have been playing on a new artificial turf again, which should not differ from natural turf in terms of playing characteristics. In 2010, the stadium was renovated for $ 226 million.

Over 110,000 spectators are regularly present at the games. On September 10, 2011, a game of the Michigan Wolverines and the Notre Dame Fighting Irish counted 114,804 spectators, which is a record in the recent history of college football .

On December 11, 2010, 104,173 spectators officially watched an ice hockey game between the University of Michigan and Michigan State University , which the Michigan Wolverines won 5-0. This game went into the Guinness Book of Records as " The Big Chill at the Big House " .

On January 1, 2014, another record number of spectators was set for an ice hockey game: At the NHL Winter Classic , the Toronto Maple Leafs defeated the Detroit Red Wings 3-2 after a shootout in front of 105,491 spectators.

On August 2, 2014, 109,318 spectators attended the semi-final game of a pre-season tournament between the European soccer teams Real Madrid and Manchester United , which was played at Michigan Stadium , setting a new record for soccer games on US soil. The game ended 3-1 for the English team.
